Job description

We are seeking an experienced and organized Buyer / Yard & Materials Coordinator to join our construction team. This position will be responsible for purchasing and coordinating materials required for construction projects, while also taking ownership of the company’s yard and shop inventory. As a fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) position, the Buyer is required to travel to and from project sites in accordance with the established rotation schedule.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Purchase construction materials, supplies, tools, equipment, and other items required for projects.
  • Prepare, issue, and track Purchase Orders (POs).
  • Obtain and compare pricing and quotations from suppliers.
  • Coordinate material requirements with Project Managers, Site Supervisors, Foremen, and the shop.
  • Track orders from the time they are placed through delivery to ensure materials arrive when required.
  • Receive and verify deliveries against purchase orders, packing slips, and material requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records of materials purchased, received, transferred, and issued to projects.
  • Take responsibility for yard and shop inventory, ensuring materials are properly organized, labelled, and easy to locate.
  • Maintain an up-to-date inventory of materials, tools, and commonly used construction supplies.
  • Monitor inventory levels and identify items that need to be reordered.
  • Coordinate the movement of materials between the yard, shop, and construction sites.
  • Communicate with suppliers regarding pricing, availability, delivery schedules, shortages, and discrepancies.
  • Work proactively with the construction team to identify upcoming material requirements and avoid project delays.
  • Maintain purchasing, inventory, and delivery records using Microsoft Excel and other computer systems.
  • Develop and maintain spreadsheets for tracking inventory, purchase orders, deliveries, and project materials.
  • Keep the yard and shop organized and ensure materials are stored safely and efficiently.
  • Assist with coordinating deliveries and pickups as required.
  • Support the project team with general purchasing and material coordination needs.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Previous experience in construction purchasing, procurement, materials coordination, inventory control, or a similar role.
  • Knowledge of construction materials, tools, equipment, and general construction practices is an asset.
  • Experience creating and managing Purchase Orders (POs).
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, orders, and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Bilingual in both English and French is a requirement.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with suppliers, project managers, supervisors, and trades.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of purchasing and inventory responsibilities.
  • Comfortable working between an office, construction yard, and shop environment.
  • Valid driver’s licence is an asset.
