An Education Assistant supporting blind and / or visually impaired students plays a vital role in their educational journey. They adapt classroom materials into accessible formats like braille or large print, and assist with specialized equipment or technology such as screen readers or magnifiers.

Beyond academics, Education Assistants foster independence and confidence in visually impaired students, creating an inclusive environment where every student can reach their potential.

POSTING DETAILS

  • Position : Special Education Assistant
  • Focus : Supporting blind / visually impaired students
  • Start Date : Sept 2, 2025
  • Hours : Full-time, 2 positions (Elementary and Secondary)

  • Duties & Responsibilities

  • Transcribe written material into Braille
  • Interpret Braille for teachers
  • Transfer materials like maps and diagrams into tactile form
  • Prepare materials in large print
  • Assist with skills such as Braille, Nemeth code, orientation, mobility, and technology
  • Support students in class activities challenging due to visual impairment
  • Implement and monitor behavior management programs
  • Maintain student progress records
  • Administer and record test results
  • Assist students in integrating into regular classes and report progress
  • Mark assignments using a key
  • Work with students individually or in groups for review and drills
  • Supervise students as needed, including crosswalk supervision
  • Operate equipment like duplicators, computers, Braille devices
  • Perform other duties within scope of knowledge and skills
  • Required Qualifications

  • Grade 12 and a Special Education Teacher Assistant Certificate or equivalent experience
  • Grade II Braille Certificate or equivalent experience
  • Proficiency in transcribing print to Braille and vice versa
  • Flexibility to meet diverse student needs
  • First Aid Certificate (Standard or Emergency)
  • Effective interaction with students
  • Effective communication with tact and discretion
  • Ability to judge and decide within established methods
  • Knowledge of behavior management and task analysis techniques
  • Basic computer skills
  • Physical ability to perform duties
  • Completion of POPARD training on ASD and ABA (required for certain positions)
