Position Overview
Under the general supervision of the Program Team Manager, the LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE (LPN) provides professional practical nursing services to designated patients including independent nursing services, administration of prescribed medical treatments, collaboration and interaction within the health care team and participation in the coordination of patient care and discharge.
The LPN demonstrates a commitment to the vision, values, goals, and objectives of the facility / program / unit.
The LPN works to full scope of practice, engages in ongoing education and maintains competency with Professional Standards of Practice, College of Licensed Practical Nurse of Manitoba Code of Ethics, Competency Profile for Licensed Practical Nurses in Manitoba and the Regulated Health Professions Act.
Experience
One year of recent acute medical / surgical nursing experience is required.
Education (Degree / Diploma / Certificate)
- Graduate of an approved Licensed Practical Nursing program required.
- Must be eligible for and willing to enroll in and successfully complete the Manitoba Nephrology Nursing Course (MNNC).
Prior to beginning the MNNC, must complete a pre-study program and pass an exam on the basis of the pre-study program. The Manitoba Nephrology Nursing Course is a full time nine-week training program with a period of theory, labs and clinical experience followed by 1008 (equivalent to 6 months full time) hours of work experience in dialysis.
Successful candidates will be responsible for payment of tuition and purchase of required textbooks / reading materials for the program.
Certification / Licensure / Registration
- Certification in IV Therapy and IV Medication Administration required.
- Responsible for maintaining and providing proof of registration with the Current active registration with the College of License Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPNM).
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with WRHA policy.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bilingualism required (ability to understand and speak English / French) .
- Knowledge of : Adheres to Professional Standards of Practice, Competency Profile for Licensed Practical Nurses in Manitoba and Code of Ethics.
Regional / Facility / Unit policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines. Nursing care knowledge related to clinical area.
Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Protection of Persons in Care Act, Mental Health Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions) and other legislated acts.
Roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team. Principles of delegation.
- Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and / or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated critical thinking / problem solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize care for an individual patient or group of patients.
- Ability to respond to a variety of simultaneous demands.

- Proficient with computers, software programs, and applications such as Windows and Word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.

The candidate must be able to understand and speak French at a proficiency level that allows them to sustain varied in-depth conversations with patients and families.

Physical Requirements
- Good physical and mental health.
- Moderate to heavy physical effort required.
- Rotating shifts and weekends may be required.
- The successful applicant may be required to provide stand-by coverage for dialysis.
Note : Please be advised that there are staggered start and finish times for day and evening shifts on this unit :
- Day shifts are between the hours of 0730 and 1545
- Evening shifts are between the hours of 1130 and 2345
There are also standby on-call shifts on this unit.
