The Law Society of Alberta (Law Society) regulates the legal profession in the public interest.
In alignment with the Law Society’s vision, mission, and strategic plan, the Accounting department provides the Boards of Directors (the Benchers and Advisory Board), Committees (Audit and Finance), management and all business units with timely, accurate and meaningful financial information and advice to support effective strategic and operational decision making.
The department is responsible for the accounting records of three distinct but related entities : The Law Society, the Alberta Lawyers Insurance Association (ALIA), and the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED).
The Accountant will work closely with the Manager, Finance and Accounting in the preparation and analysis of monthly, quarterly and year end accounting information to meet the financial information needs of all stakeholders.
This includes the accounting records of all three entities.
Success in this position requires excellent attention to detail, sound knowledge of financial reporting, and effective organizational and communication skills.
Key Resposibilites :
As a member of the Accounting team you will :
- Work closely with the Manager, Finance and Accounting to perform a variety of accounting tasks.
- Preparation of monthly working papers and financial statements with analysis
- Provide documentation and analysis to external auditors.
- Prepare bank reconciliations.
- Prepare GST returns.
- Cash management and analysis.
- Investment reconciliation and analysis.
- Deferred revenue reconciliation and analysis.
- Capital asset and amortization reconciliation and analysis.
- Review accounts payable invoices for proper coding and approval.
- Provide support for the accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.
- Investigate and reconcile interfund and intercompany accounts.
- Assist with the preparation of monthly financial reports and budget variance analysis.
- Assist with financial reporting, forecasting and budgeting.
- Provide assistance and support to the Billings Coordinator during fee billing periods.
- Provide guidance and support to the Accounting Assistants (AP & AR) and Payroll & Benefits Coordinator.
- Compile sound financial documents that meet stakeholder needs.
- Prepare various account reconciliations and related analysis.
- Provide ongoing support to department Managers regarding financial data and information requests.
- Review and process forms, as required.
- Complete assigned accounting tasks and projects in a professional and timely manner
- Prepare journal entries and perform related data entry as required.
- Act as backup to the Payroll and Benefits Coordinator with all aspects of the payroll process.
- Other tasks and projects as assigned.
Qualification :
- CPA designation is considered an asset.
- Strong accounting skills with a minimum of three years of related financial reporting and accounting experience.
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamic Great Plains (GP2016) and / or Business Central is considered an asset.
- Proficiency with UKGPro payroll and time management or similar payroll processing and time management program considered an asset.
- Excellent computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Demonstrated excellence in attention to detail while maintaining a big picture perspective.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently to organize and prioritize numerous duties and responsibilities to meet required deadlines.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- The ability to work in, and promote, a team and customer service environment.
- A desire and capability for growth to meet additional requirements added to this position over time.
- Able to work overtime as required.
