This role focuses on monitoring heavy civil and transportation construction activities, tracking quantities and production, preparing detailed daily reports, and ensuring all work complies with project specifications and contract requirements. The Construction Inspector will serve as the primary field representative, maintaining accurate records, supporting safety observations, and coordinating closely with contractors and project stakeholders in a remote project environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site construction oversight for railway and related heavy civil infrastructure improvements, ensuring work is completed in accordance with project specifications and requirements.
  • Perform field inspections of construction activities, including earthworks, grading, and other transportation infrastructure components, to verify quality, compliance, and safety.
  • Monitor contractor activities on a daily basis, observing work methods, progress, and adherence to project plans and safety protocols.
  • Track quantities, production rates, and contractor progress, maintaining accurate measurements and records for approximately 750,000 m³ of earthworks and other project components.
  • Prepare clear and detailed daily reports, field logs, and project documentation that capture work performed, quantities, issues, and observations.
  • Maintain organized field records and documentation to support contract administration, change tracking, and project reporting requirements.
  • Lead and participate in daily job briefings, communicating work plans, safety considerations, and project expectations to contractors and field personnel.
  • Represent the owner/engineer independently in the field, acting as the primary point of contact for contractors, foremen, and project stakeholders.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, clients, and foremen, addressing questions, clarifying requirements, and resolving field issues in a timely manner.
  • Support safety observation activities by monitoring site conditions, identifying potential risks, and reinforcing safe work practices.
  • Use Microsoft Office tools such as Excel, Word, and Outlook to prepare reports, track quantities, manage correspondence, and organize project information.
  • Make informed decisions independently in the field, using sound judgment to address unforeseen conditions, schedule impacts, and construction challenges.
  • Coordinate with project teams to ensure alignment between field activities, design intent, and contract documents.
  • Work proactively to identify and resolve problems, recommending practical solutions that support project quality, schedule, and cost objectives.
  • Maintain an organized and detail-oriented approach to all inspection, documentation, and communication tasks in a remote project environment.

Essential Skills

  • 2–5+ years of field-based construction experience in construction administration, construction inspection, field coordination, or similar roles.
  • Proven experience supporting heavy civil, railway, highway, roadway, grading, earthworks, pipeline, or other transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to track quantities, production, and contractor progress on construction projects with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Hands-on experience performing field inspections and monitoring contractor activities to verify compliance with project specifications and safety requirements.
  • Experience preparing daily reports, field logs, and project documentation in a clear, organized, and timely manner.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to lead daily job briefings and communicate effectively with contractors, clients, and foremen.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel for quantity tracking, Word for report preparation, and Outlook for email and scheduling.
  • Civil Engineering degree, Civil Engineering Technology diploma, and/or CET/ASET designation.
  • Valid driver's license suitable for travel to and from remote project locations.
  • Ability to independently represent the owner or engineer in the field, making decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Comfort working directly with contractors and field personnel in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Ability to work independently in remote environments for extended periods.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Railway construction experience, particularly related to rail infrastructure improvements and associated earthworks.
  • Experience with grading or earthworks activities, including large-scale excavation, embankment construction, and site preparation.
  • Surveying experience, such as working with survey crews, interpreting survey data, or verifying field measurements.
  • Exposure to oil and gas, pipeline, or light rail transit (LRT) projects and their associated construction practices.
  • Understanding of geotechnical construction activities, including compaction testing, soil behavior, and retaining wall construction.

Work Environment

This role is based on a remote railway infrastructure project in Northern British Columbia, in the Hazelton/Smithers area. The assignment is expected to last approximately 8–10 months and will involve typical workdays of 12–14 hours. A 14/7 schedule will be established for the project, and a living-out arrangement will be provided, with hotel accommodations, travel, and meals reimbursed.
