CONTRACT TYPE : Contract(Union)

HOURS : 35 hours per week (Monday-Friday with occasional evening and / or weekend hours)

PAY RATE : $28.55 per hour

REPORTS TO : Supervisor, Newcomer Services

START DATE : Immediately

End Date : December 31, 2024

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY :

With 40+ years of operations, Skills for Change is a highly respected non-profit charity with a province-wide reputation for pioneering programs that respond to shifting immigration and workplace trends and lead to employment.

Skills for Change provides multi-sited employment, job skills, career exploration through mentoring and entrepreneurship, job development, mental health and wellness, language and settlement programs, and services throughout the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Areas.

PROGRAM NATURE AND SCOPE :

The Settlement Worker, Asylum Claimants and Employment at Skills for Change assists newcomer clients to adapt and integrate effectively into Canadian society by providing them with labour market orientation support.

This role will deliver programming to newcomers through facilitating information and orientation sessions, group workshops, individual employment counselling and referral to suitable services to meet their settlement and employment needs.

Clients will gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed decisions about their careers and successfully navigate the labour market.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct outreach, intakes and needs assessments with clients, primarily asylum claimants in the GTA to determine eligibility, needs and suitability for services to meet their career goals
  • Evaluate client’s skills, interests, and experiences to determine their strengths and areas for development; create solution-focused employment and training plans with clients
  • Develop and deliver settlement and employment-related information sessions and workshops
  • Provide clients with appropriate information and referrals to meet their settlement, training and employment needs
  • Assist clients in developing effective job search strategies, including resume writing, job application, interview preparation, and networking techniques
  • Invite guest speakers to conduct information sessions on specific employment, and cultural adaptation topics based on client needs
  • Stay updated on local labour market trends, job opportunities, industry demands, and skills requirements particularly as they relate to refugees, asylum seeker claimants and internationally trained individuals
  • Complete client follow-ups and case management tracking
  • Maintain and update client files as required by the funder
  • Conduct outreach to other community organizations, for program promotion, client referral, and itinerant employment-related services
  • Maintain client database, produce statistics, and reports as required, e.g., Salesforce
  • Participate in the distribution, collection, and analysis of participant surveys and other evaluation and tracking procedures
  • Participate in organizing networking events, guest speaker events, and other events as needed
  • Provide reception coverage as needed (lunch breaks, sick leave, vacation leave, etc.)
  • Work as part of SfC team to ensure smooth delivery and coordination of services to clients
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of service delivery and present solutions to enhance services on an ongoing basis
  • Other duties as assigned by Management
  • Participate in all meetings as require

SKILLS, EDUCATION & ATTRIBUTES :

  • Post-Secondary degree in social work and / or credentials as a Social Worker, Community (Support) Worker, Career Counsellor, or other related fields required.
  • Minimum 2 years work experience working with the newcomer community in the settlement and / or community work sectors is mandatory
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Sensitivity to, and understanding of, issues and barriers affecting immigrant and refugee communities including women, newcomers, immigrants, youth, and other disadvantaged groups
  • Thorough knowledge of all facets of job search, career development, including an understanding of labour market trends / challenges and community resources
  • Fluency in a second language is considered an asset
  • Excellent teamwork and positive attitude toward change
  • Strong problem-solving skills and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Windows, MS Office, internet use, and ability to deliver PowerPoint presentations
  • Knowledge of Salesforce is an asset
  • A clear, mandatory vulnerable sector check is required
  • Position requires travel in GTA
