The Systems Administrator role focuses on the operation and maintenance of the local area network which includes desktops, data storage systems, virtual and physical server infrastructures, information systems and archiving.
The Systems Administrator documents policies and procedures, analysis, design, testing and troubleshooting applications, identifying and implementing solutions to system incidents, training and support.
This position works closely with the Leader, Systems Architecture, other members of the FWS IT department, and external IT consultants.
Flexible work hours, on-call / after-hours support and travel to remote locations across Canada and United States is required as part of this role.
Position Overview :
Systems Infrastructure
- Assist in management of the FWS datacenter, O365 and Azure environments.
- Use monitoring tools to proactively ensure server and network stability, efficiency, and overall health.
- Maintain Microsoft Active Directory and Entra / Intune for the FWS network.
- Responsible for operating system and application configuration, packaging and testing.
- Create scripts to augment or optimize the routine functions or performance of desktop and server tasks.
Systems Backup & Security
- Assist in management of security platforms and participate in security initiatives and remediations.
- Maintenance and testing of the backup and DR environment.
- Coordinate security patch management strategies and execution of such to servers and workstations.
Systems Support
- Create and maintain technician procedures and user documentation.
- Maintenance of communications network, including remote devices, video conferencing systems, web conferences, etc.
- Conduct root-cause problem analysis and remediation.
- Provide mentorship and coaching for Systems Technicians in day-to-day operations.
- Travel to FWS corporate offices and Job Sites to perform infrastructure maintenance and support.
- Coordinate and resolve Level 2 service desk ticket escalations.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Needed :

- Must be detail-oriented and well organized , with the ability to prioritize tasks.
- Current knowledge and proficiency with design, configuration, optimization and monitoring of network, satellite networks, and other networking technologies.
Education and Experience
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in an IT-related field . A combination of education and experience will also be considered.
- 3-5 years of experience in a system technician role.
- Strong working knowledge of Windows Operating System and Microsoft 365 cloud products.
- Excellent knowledge and experience with network protocols and services (TCP / IP, SMTP, DNS, DHCP).
- Hands on experience in the following areas is an asset : Windows Server OS, Server Virtualization (VMware), Active Directory, SAN / NAS storage, Microsoft Defender Suite, server monitoring tools (PRTG)
Other Information
- May be required to work extended hours.
- Must be able to lift 40lbs.
- Must have the ability to travel as required. Travel includes to Canada / US FWS offices and project sites (remote locations).
