The General Manager provides leadership and strategic management for YMCA Cedar Glen, ensuring the successful operations of camping and outdoor education programs onsite, as well as the continued operation of a small-scale crop farm.

The position provides support to approximately 10 full-time staff and upwards of 50-75 part-time staff and ensures effective recruitment, training and coaching of all staff.

The General Manager is responsible for day-to-day operation of programs and services year-round with approximately 20,000 visitors annually.

The General Manager will provide overall leadership for the implementation of the Association’s Strategic Plan as it applies operationally at Cedar Glen.

In addition, this position will provide long-term growth of the Outdoor Centre through the development of current programs along with the implementation of new programs.

Program models will be strategic and self-sustaining. Models will include program principles, quality standards, marketing supports, financial parameters and training guidelines.

The General Manager will support a team who will explore meaningful partnerships when implementing programs into the community and will be an advocate for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging in the Outdoor.

In this role, you will :

Coordinate a team to work interdepartmentally in delivering all aspects of the operations daily; from customer service, administrative, site and facility, maintenance, programming, food services, and much more;

to ensure all visitors have a successful visit and stay every time

Provide strategic leadership to promote all Cedar Glen. Collaborate with Communications to develop marketing materials, and coordinate production and distribution.

Determine program fees for the coming season. Ensure programs are equitable and accessible for all communities

  • Work closely with VP of Camping & Outdoor Education, Asset Development, onsite Facility Manager to proactively maintain 263 acres along with various physical assets and buildings onsite to ensure the safe operation of the full facility
  • Coordinate annually with internal stakeholders such as Human Resources, Risk Management, Research, Marketing, Finance to update programming, services and registration collateral
  • Monitor all budgets on a frequent basis, including revenue and expenses over $2 million. Ensure accrued payables and receivables are managed appropriately.

Oversee collection process for camp fees and outdoor centre fees. Oversee approval of YMCA Financial Assistance applications.

Provide regular reporting on financial forecasting to the Vice President, Camping and Outdoor Education

  • Coordinate outdoor education bookings and monitor forecasts to achieve revenue and member targets. Implement action plans in situations of low bookings
  • Coordinate with IT for appropriate communication tools, including computers, cell phones, and software licenses, onsite tech and internet needs, etc
  • Exceed all funding requirements for funded programs. Complete Service Evaluations for funders and respond to requests for proposals for additional funding
  • Ensure high quality of customer service and satisfaction for stakeholders
  • Act as liaison for customer service. Address all parent and group concerns, ensure health & safety is upheld in all departments, etc
  • Ensure all full-time staff are well-versed in their community, actively involved, and collaborate with community partners.

Cooperate with internal and external partnerships to explore cross-functional programs that meet the needs of each unique client group, including the local community

  • Develop, implement, and conduct the annual recruitment process, including analyzing staffing requirements, developing job descriptions, preparing for interviews and the hiring process, etc
  • Provide leadership and supervision to Directors in the recruitment process for seasonal camp and outdoor centre staff
  • Participate in internal committees and external committees. Attend and conduct workshops at conferences and conduct research as requested
  • Maintain partnerships with a variety of stakeholders and represent YMCA of Greater Toronto and YMCA Camping & Outdoor Education at various networks
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What you need to succeed :

  • Commitment to the YMCA’s Mission, Vision and Values
  • Focus on the health, safety and wellbeing of all children, youth, and vulnerable people in YMCA programs including understanding legal and moral obligations related to reporting suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services
  • YMCA Competencies : Accountable, Relationship-Builder, Improvement-Orientated, Team Player & Leader, Equity and Wellbeing Promoter

You bring :

  • University degree in Recreation and Leisure Management or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Previous senior-level supervisory experience in camping and outdoor education environments and / or large multi-service not-for-profit environments
  • A minimum of five years of supervisory experience required, demonstrating progressive understanding of the YMCA and the ability to establish strong relationships with community partners
  • Sound knowledge of child development and healthy adolescent development
  • Sound knowledge of YMCA Camping Quality Recommended Practices and other regulatory bodies such as the OCA, OPHEA and MOHLTC
  • Previous experience in implementing and developing new programs and services is an asset
  • Strong budget management skills, collaboration and negotiation skills, as well as time management and problem-solving skills
  • Leadership and management skills for effectively overseeing multiple staff members with varying experience and responsibilities
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills, enabling the establishment of rapport and fostering excellent communication with members, staff, and volunteers
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Proficiency with computers, including Word and Excel
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging as well as experience in leading and developing and implementing equity-focused initiatives that address systemic barriers
