Description :

This course will introduce candidates to the methodologies and issues relevant to teaching Biology in Ontario in the Intermediate and Senior divisions (Grades 7-12).

The course provides opportunities to develop a practical understanding of instructional methods and skills through unit and lesson planning in a variety of classroom contexts.

Furthermore, candidates will be introduced to safe laboratory work, the effective selection and use of resources, the integration of technology into teaching, a variety of assessment / evaluation strategies, and to creating an inclusive and motivating learning environment.

Throughout the program, efforts are made to integrate theoretical ideas and perspectives from the educational research literature with teaching and learning practices in schools.

This course is normally open only to students in the Master of Teaching program.

Sessional dates of appointment : Sep. 2024 to Apr. 2025

Salary : As of May 01, 2024, the minimum stipend is $9,457.90 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a half credit course. Salary may be prorated based on the appointment percentage.

Minimum qualifications :

Candidates :

1. Should possess a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent professional experience,

  • 2. Must demonstrate currency and mastery in the course subject matter;
  • 3. Must demonstrate excellence in teaching, including online teaching as relevant;
  • 4. Must demonstrate evidence of knowledge and practice of principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion;
  • 5. Must demonstrate excellence in teaching and leading teachers / teacher-candidates’ professional learning;

6. An Ontario Teaching certificate is an asset."

Description of duties : Prepare, organize, and teach this course graduate seminar; be available to students seeking assistance between classes;

evaluate and provide students with feedback on their work.
