What you’ll be doing

Global Operational Risk Management (GORM) is the 2nd Line of Defense group responsible for providing oversight of CIBC's global operational risk exposures through the Operational Risk Management and Control Frameworks including : people, technology, processes or external events.

GORM has responsibility for oversight of the operational risk management function globally, including the Operational Risk Management Program and its related methodologies, policies, processes, guidelines, systems and tools.

The Director, Operational Risk Management will facilitate the development, maintenance and monitoring the effectiveness of the operational risk framework, and supporting taxonomies, for the sound risk management practices across all of CIBC ’s business platforms and functions.

Further this role works to coordinate with regional requirements, and alignment to Enterprise.

In addition this role will ensure an effective Enterprise operational risk programs framework is in place to set requirements for operational risk programs in place for Change Management, Scenario Analysis, External Events, and other operation risk programs;

including Thematic Reviews to ensure programs are aligned to regulatory requirements such as OSFI E-21.

How you’ll succeed

Business acumen and relationship management- Establish clear goals, objectives, and deliverables for the team based on GORM and Stakeholder priorities;

monitor team progress and pivot to emerging priorities when needed. Stay abreast of regulatory changes and monitor compliance to policy and communicating overall GORM team for liaison with 1st LOD and other impacted parties.

Strategic Planning- Based on framework, help create strategic directions for programs externally or internally evolution, including setting direction, stakeholder engagement, tool evaluation, implementation, and monitoring.

Identify and prioritize future practice requirements after consultation with a defined community of users including both 1LOD, 2nd line.

Review and keep the supporting taxonomies up to date and aligned with industry benchmarks.

Communication- Provide expert advice on operational risk, leveraging insights from operational risk reporting and analytics, independent reviews and industry perspective to ensure operational risk program maintains a forward-looking view that considers both managed and emerging risks.

Actively seek to simplify requirements where appropriate to enable consistent practices.

Stakeholder Management - Actively support business partners in all lines of defense such as programs, Portfolio Management operational leads, Control Groups and Second Line of Defense in implementing the operational risk program in a manner that aligns with strategic objectives.

Prioritize and facilitate responses to queries and ad hoc requests coming from internal and external stakeholders.

Who you are

You demonstrate experience. Regulatory compliance Oversight Function (OF) accountabilities, monitoring the regulatory landscape for changes in legislation and regulatory guidance pertaining to federally regulated financial institutions and ensure assessment, communication and documentation of CIBC’s compliance is completed, in alignment with CIBC’s Regulatory Compliance Management policy.

This role will also interface with CIBC's subsidiaries on policy matters and oversight.

Builds and sustains strong internal relationships and is viewed as a valued partner that offers sound and pragmatic guidance, demonstrates a deep understanding of their environment and context and facilitates productive risk discussions and outcomes.

The Director leverages strong communication, interpersonal skills and teamwork to build and sustain strong internal relationships within Risk Management, business units and other enterprise functional groups.

Demonstrates clarity of thought in both written and verbal communications and develops and delivers strong reporting content, impactful and insightful presentations and assessment summaries on an ongoing basis for senior audiences and risk committees up to and including the Board.

The candidate demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate with internal / external auditors and regulators in relation to ongoing exams, remediation activities, and incidents through written and verbal reports and updates.

You are confident in your insights. Maintains an industry view of the broad operational risk management landscape, understand best practice and performance benchmarks and monitor emerging trends and regulations.

Provides guidance on the management of operational risk when consulted, including risk mitigation strategies.
