What You’ll Be Doing
- Responsible for the design of a project from start to finish with a high level of technical, professional, engineering and consulting expertise
- Assess customer specifications and processes to develop a comprehensive conceptual design for the proposed system. This may include supporting design calculations, schematics, 3rd party equipment recommendations, new available technology / processes
- Foster creativity and resourcefulness in all interactions with external and internal customers to address any issues or concerns that may arise during the project.
- Assist in the development of project plans, budget, resource requirements and coordinating the efforts of the design team
- Work closely with Project Management to provide support, status reports and ensure a seamless transition during the assembly build and integration phase of the project.
- Proactively address quote deficiencies, scope creep / change through accepted channels
- Liaise with the Project Management team to ensure timely updates to the Schedule.
- Collaborate with internal customers (e.g. Sales, Applications, Project Management, Shop Floor Assembly, Purchasing, etc.
as well as external contacts including customers, consultants, 3rd party vendors, etc.
- Promote a collaborative and inclusive work style with the project team to conduct design reviews, I / O and functional reviews, safety risk assessments, certification support, design evaluations and modifications as needed
- Evaluate various mechanical products under consideration for purchase to determine their efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Produce accurate CAD layouts, manufacturing drawings and bills of material.
- Review, evaluate, and improve upon engineering designs prepared by the design team.
- Ensure that designs are safe, efficient, effective, and able to be manufactured prior to manufacturing release.
- Review peer drawings for accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, hardness, etc. and approve release for manufacturing.
- Review assembly bills of material prepared by the design team and approve for purchasing of 3rd party items.
- Assist the shop floor assembly team during the integration phase to resolve any issues and assist in the completion of system.
- Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation.
- Develop strong customer relationships with the view to sourcing additional work and seek out new potential opportunities.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with local, national, and international standards and legislation. (i.e. OSHA, CE or customer specific)

Level of Autonomy and Authority
- Works without detailed supervision, but within clear guidelines, defined standards and specifications. Difficult, complex or unusual matters are referred to more senior authority
- Will guide and monitor the work of other staff working on a project basis
- Provides input and makes recommendations to management in areas of improvement
- Will support other projects from time to time including installation of automated equipment on customer sites, customer service and training
Key Requirements
- Post-Secondary education in mechanical engineering or related discipline
- A minimum of 3 years of engineering experience in industrial automation
- Proficiency using Solidworks and AutoCAD
- Proficiency using Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Strong written and verbal skills in the English language
