Job description

About McElhanney

Based in Western Canada for over 110 years, McElhanney offers innovative and practical engineering, surveying, mapping, planning, landscape architecture, and environmental services. As a 100% employee-owned and operated firm, with over 1,400 staff members in 33 locations, we are proud to offer qualified staff with shareholding options in our company. At McElhanney, we work in teams to build strong connections with our staff, clients, and local communities. Our employees enjoy working here because of our varied projects, high levels of autonomy, opportunities for career development, excellent total compensation and benefits package, and collaborating with a team of great professionals.

Opportunity

McElhanney Ltd. is calling on passionate and curious Engineers-in-Training to help us strengthen infrastructure in Indigenous communities. This is more than just an engineering role—it’s a unique opportunity to connect directly with communities, support local housing and infrastructure development, and see your work create visible, lasting impact. You’ll gain hands‑on experience across water, wastewater, and community infrastructure design, all while learning under the mentorship of experienced Professional Engineers registered in BC. While not exclusively dedicated to Indigenous Community work, this role would place an emphasis on this area. The successful candidate will be part of our Kamloops Branch and will be based in, or willing to relocate to Kamloops.

Key Responsibilities

  • Community Focus : Build trusted relationships with Indigenous communities through meaningful engagement and consistent follow‑through.
  • Infrastructure assessments : Support infrastructure assessments that help identify and prioritize the needs of local communities.
  • Collaborative Project Delivery : Work on impactful projects from concept through completion, collaborating with internal teams in geomatics, geotech, structures, and more.
  • Design and Reporting : Contribute to designs and technical reports for wastewater and other community infrastructure as well as supporting funding applications that help turn community goals into funded projects.
  • Field Inspections : Participate in field inspections and site reviews—get your boots dirty and learn by doing.

Skills and Attributes for Success

  • Passion for Indigenous community development : You’re inspired by the opportunity to work on projects that support and empower Indigenous communities.
  • Strong communicator : You bring energy and empathy when building relationships with clients, communities, and your teammates.
  • Technical Curiosity : You’re always eager to learn new tools and approaches, and you bring a problem‑solving mindset to the table.
  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering.
  • Registration in good standing as an Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) in British Columbia, or eligibility to be registered.
  • Why Live, Work and Play in Kamloops every day!

  • Natural Beauty and Outdoor Activities : Kamloops is surrounded by stunning landscapes, including rivers, lakes, and mountains, offering endless opportunities for hiking, biking, skiing, and fishing.
  • Affordable Cost of Living : Compared to major Canadian cities, Kamloops offers more affordable housing and living costs, making it an attractive option for families and individuals.
  • Vibrant Community : The city hosts numerous community events and festivals throughout the year, fostering a strong sense of community and providing plenty of social activities.
  • Compensation and Perks at a Glance

McElhanney offers competitive compensation ranging from $70,000 to $90,000 per annum, tailored to match individual qualifications. The base salary / wage range listed in the job posting reflects the necessary qualifications and experience for the position, with final compensation determined by the successful candidate’s qualifications.

    Perks include

  • Work‑Life Harmony : Balance your personal and professional commitments.
  • Comprehensive Benefits : Maternity and parental leave top‑up program, health and dental coverage, RRSP matching, and Employee & Family Assistance Program.
  • Safe & Inclusive Workplace : Respectful environment supporting professional growth.
  • Competitive Compensation : Attractive salary and bonuses.
  • Professional Development : Reimbursement for dues, educational assistance, mentorship program, internal committees, workshops, and committee involvement.
  • This role is designated as a safety‑sensitive position and completion of pre‑employment drug & alcohol and fitness for work testing is required.

Our Commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

At McElhanney, our unwavering commitment lies in cultivating a culture that aligns with our core values and fosters diversity, equity, and inclusion. We celebrate the collective achievements of a team rich in expertise, experiences, and perspectives, and welcome applications from individuals of diverse ethnicities, religions, backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, gender identities, aboriginal statuses, various age groups, and those with disabilities. Requests for accommodations can be made at any stage of the selection process. If this job description resonates with you, we encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet all of the requirements outlined. We’re interested in getting to know you and explore the unique contributions you can bring to McElhanney!
