Job Description
Reporting to the Manager, National Strategic Placements, the Senior Underwriter, National Strategic Placements leverages technical underwriting expertise to aid in the design and distribution of wholesale underwriting solutions.
The successful candidate for this role will apply relationship management skills, as they work with high-profile broker partners and senior leaders from across the organization, to accelerate organic growth on large national Commercial Insurance accounts.
This role requires you to think outside of the box and bring a solution-oriented approach to underwriting as the National Strategic Placement Team develops unique and tailored insurance offerings.
What can you expect in this role?
- Within your level of authority, assess program referrals, accepting, declining, or amending terms, in accordance with defined program / delegated underwriting agreement, underwriting guidelines, standard operating procedures, and line of business and segmentation strategies
- Create summaries and recommendations for new national strategic placement opportunities, used to brief in head office underwriting and pricing teams for full review, applying knowledge of appropriate rating structures, forms of coverage, reinsurance structures, hazards, terms, conditions and wordings for high-complexity risks and cases, to highlight key considerations
- Build presentation skills, preparing business updates on National Strategic Placements operations
- Develop meaningful relationships with national broker partners through in-person visits, insurance industry functions and marketing events
- Establish cooperative broker partnerships to identify future opportunities through effective communication and high service standards
- Foster relationships across the enterprise and work cross functionally with teams, including : corporate underwriting, pricing, regional mid-market, small business, specialty, sales & distribution, claims, finance, legal, marketing, and personal insurance
- Documents standard operating procedures for new accounts, as needed
What do you bring to the role?
- University degree or college diploma or a completed CIP designation required
- Commercial insurance underwriting experience required, property and auto expertise are an asset
- 3 to 5 years of experience underwriting a wide variety of risks
- Knowledge of Canadian regional nuances, coverage differences, and insurance regulations
- Excellent ability to multi-task and monitor progress to meet deadlines
- Ability to operate in ambiguity and under pressure
- Detail-oriented and strong problem-solving skills with the ability to gather information, analyze and solve through complexities
- Strong computer literacy skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and Policy Administration Systems
- Strong customer service, verbal and written communication skills
Salary Range : $66,300 - $122,100

Actual salary for the role may vary depending on work location of the successful candidate and other factors including but not limited to, skills, education, experience, working conditions and the local labour market.
In addition to base pay, eligible employees may participate in various incentive plans which are paid out at the discretion of the company and subject to individual and company performance.
