Engineer, System Planning & Grid Modernization
ABOUT THIS ROLE
Burlington Hydro Inc. ( BHI ) is seeking a Engineer, System Planning & Grid Modernization. Reporting to the Manager, System Planning & Asset Management, this position is responsible for project engineering distribution system modeling and simulations, systems analysis for optimization and reliability, and conducting protection and coordination studies of electric utility distribution systems.
This role requires expertise in utility electric distribution planning, protection and control design, and operational technologies.
This is an on-site position at 1340 Brant Street, Burlington. Burlington Hydro currently offers eligible employees the option to work remotely one day per week as part of the Work from Home Program.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct power system modeling, analysis, and project-oriented engineering activities, including work on distribution automation, non-wire alternatives, battery energy storage systems, renewable energy, microgrids, and other Distributed Energy Resources (DER) impacting the distribution system
- Perform power systems analysis for short circuit current, load flow, feeder load balancing, losses, reliability, protective device coordination, voltage impact, grounding, arc flash, network configuration, and feeder loading optimization
- Analyze power system events, prepare technical reports, and clearly communicate results and action plans both verbally and in writing
- Carry out power system planning and modeling in long-term, near-term, and operational planning horizons using CYME distribution planning software, ensuring an economic and reliable distribution system
- Evaluate the reliability, stability, and efficiency of existing and planned power systems, identifying and implementing solutions as needed
- Prepare load forecasts for Regional Planning, IESO, and Hydro One
- Conduct technical reviews on system impacts from proposed substantial load additions, providing results and recommendations
- Develop protective schemes and issue programmable device settings
- Coordinate and approve the design, testing, and installation of protection, control, and operational communication equipment / networks per utility standards, IEEE, and CSA guidelines
- Draft technical specifications for grid modernization projects and review related technical documentation related to product specifications, market research, documented analysis, test instruction manuals, etc.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in distribution system planning, protection, and coordination, providing technical support to internal and external customers
- Stay informed on emerging electric distribution system technologies, including smart grid developments, with a focus on enhancing positive operational impacts
- Perform routine engineering and design tasks and participate in field reviews of distribution assets
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, identifying critical path items to meet deadlines and prepare instruction orders for hydro crews
- Collaborate closely with Engineering, Stations, Powerlines, and Control Room departments
- All other duties as assigned
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- Electrical Engineering Degree or equivalent from an accredited post-secondary institution
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation
- 3-5 years Electrical Engineering experience, preferably in distribution systems
WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL
- Proficient in utility electric distribution system planning, protection, and control design; familiar with construction, operation, and maintenance of distribution substations
- Strong foundation in electricity, AC circuits, mathematics, and electrical equipment
- Knowledge of automation script development in VB / Microsoft Excel macro, C++, SQL, Python, or similar languages
- Thorough expertise in CYME, CYMTCC, CYME Gateway, GIS, and CAD systems (preferably AutoCAD and Hexagon)
- Comprehensive understanding of distribution system overcurrent protection and coordination
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, etc.)
- Experience working with the public and handling inquiries effectively
- Ability to read and interpret construction and electrical drawings
- Knowledge of policies, collective agreements, and operational needs as applied to organizational practices
- Familiarity with relevant laws, codes, standards, and regulations
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a professional, respectful approach in a team environment
- Demonstrated attention to detail, time management, and adaptability to evolving situations and technologies
- Commitment to safety, flexible working hours, and an eagerness to learn and stay up-to-date with new developments in the field
