The Opportunity

The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for Banff Centre’s Health and Safety program for all employees, participants and faculty on campus and remote workstations by providing expert, timely and accurate services, and training.

The Health and Safety Officer will work with all departments to ensure that safe work practices are in place and adhered to and will act as a resource to respond to operational needs with respect to health and safety programs and training.

Roles and Responsibilities

Reporting to Director, Human Resources, below are some key accountabilities :

  • Deliver training programs to all levels of the organization with the goal of implementing a healthy and safe culture and raising safety awareness.
  • Lead the Partnership in Injury Reduction (PIR) program at Banff Centre. Working with the selected certifying partner, conduct internal audits in non-certifying years, and be the point of contact for the external consultant in the certifying year.
  • Work with department Safety representatives to develop and maintain Health & Safety documentation ensuring that all hazards have been identified and appropriate controls put in place.
  • Participate in the investigation of serious injuries and incidences at the worksite.
  • Chair the Health & Safety Committee and implement either personally, or through others, the decisions reached by that Committee.
  • Approve Personal Protective Equipment and any other health and safety protective equipment for employee use.
  • Conduct an annual Personal Protective Equipment audit in partnership with the designated CUPE representative.
  • Ensure that departments have Safety Data Sheets available to all workers.
  • Conduct chemical inventories in all departments to ensure compliance with all applicable legislation and ensure all controlled products are properly identified and stored in compliance with policies and all pertinent Hazardous Materials regulations.
  • Ensure that departments are aware of how to properly dispose of hazardous chemicals on property. Do quarterly runs to dispose of hazardous chemicals and / or work with a 3rd party company to remove chemicals not accepted at the local dump.
  • Follows-up on WCB incidents and makes recommendations for changes required to prevent a re-occurrence. Work with the Pensions and Benefits Administrator in situations where an employee requires workplace modifications.
  • Keep current with all applicable internal policies and external regulations to ensure the Centre is in full compliance.

Implement improvements and changes required to maintain full compliance.

  • Maintain an effective working relationship with all departments.
  • Keep current with emergency and operational procedures and assist Security in amending the Emergency Procedures Manual, the Campus Evacuation and Business Continuity Manuals and the Operational Procedures Manual where required.
  • Provide direction to the WHMIS coordinators in all departments to ensure that chemical products are being properly labeled and all employees are given WHMIS site-specific training.
  • Ensure employees are trained in procedures under WHMIS and hazardous wastes storage, handling and disposal procedures.
  • Works with the Health & Safety Committee in conducting WHMIS, safety and environmental compliance audits.
  • Order and maintain first aid supplies, periodically examining first aid kits to ensure they are maintained in a state of readiness.
  • Provide Ergonomic assessments as required to employees in administrative roles
  • Participate in the Mental Health Steering Committee and help execute initiatives that promote a healthy work environment.
  • Assist the Director, Human Resources in the management of the PIR fund and Safety budget.
  • Maintain the Staff Wellness and Health and Safety SharePoint pages
  • In partnership with the Chair of the Environmental Committee organize the annual Wellness, Safety and Environmental Fair for employees.
  • Foster an internal culture that maintains the highest standards for customer service; excellence of staff, faculty, practicum, participant, and guest experience;

and fiscal, operational, and organizational integrity.

  • Maintain effective working relationships with team members, internal partners, customers, the union and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure all Health and Safety committee members represent Banff Centre to any stakeholders and constituents in an informed, helpful, and positive way, striving to increase the organization’s public value in each interaction.
  • Facilitate ongoing communication with all colleagues at all levels in the organization that interact with the Safety department ensuring individual and team behaviours are in alignment with organizational values.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

  • Diploma with relevant training in occupation health and safety
  • 3 5 Years experience in a similar position
  • PIR Auditor Certificate
  • Certificate in Hazardous Waste Disposal
  • Certification in Ergonomic Assessments (preferred)
  • Certificate in Accident Prevention, Investigation & Follow-up
  • Train the Trainer Certificates in WHMIS & Transportation of Dangerous Goods (preferred)
  • Standard First Aid Training and Instructor (preferred)
  • Strong interpersonal skills, mediation and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to develop relationships and work effectively at all levels.

  • Ability to make decisions / recommendations under pressure
  • Demonstrated coaching, advisory and / or consulting skills

Employment Terms and Benefits

  • In accordance with the terms of employment governing Management / PSP employees, this is a salaried, fulltime position, subject to a 6-month probationary period.
  • The salary range for this position is $67,367.00 - $100,039 based on experience.
  • The successful candidate will enjoy twenty paid vacation days and four personal days annually, extended medical and dental benefits, and participation in an employer-matched pension plan.
