The Role
BGC is seeking an experienced Seismic Hazard Analyst with a fundamental understanding and interest in seismology, ground motion modelling, and probabilistic seismic hazard analysis to join our team in Canada or the United States.
The successful candidate will thrive as part of multi-discipline project teams within BGCs various business sectors including mining, energy, and pipelines, and on technically challenging, medium to large scale projects.
This position can be based in any one of BGC's Canadian or US offices.
Responsibilities
- Perform probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) using up-to-date code / software and practices.
- Obtain and process seismic and seismological data (e.g., focal-mechanism inversions, hypocentral relocation, signal processing) to support the development of seismotectonic models and earthquake catalogs (including declustering and completeness).
- Develop and implement source models in a PSHA framework with input from BGCs team of earthquake geologists.
- Develop and implement ground-motion models in a PSHA framework, including the development of non-ergodic ground-motion models.
- Perform equivalent linear and non-linear site response analysis.
- Construct target spectra and develop representative earthquake time histories.
- Prepare and deliver technical presentations and reports to clients.
- Support the growth of a comprehensive seismic hazards analysis practice within BGC, including recruiting and mentoring.
Required Education, Experience, and Competencies
- Masters degree or Ph.D. in geophysics, seismology, geological / geotechnical engineering, geoscience, with a focus on seismic hazard analysis.
- 7-15 years of post-graduate experience in seismic hazard analysis is preferred. Candidates with more years of experience may be considered at a job level commensurate with their experience.
- Registered or eligible for registration / licensure as a professional engineer, geoscientist, or geophysicist in Canada and / or the United States.
- Clear understanding of applicable seismic hazard regulations and guidelines in the tailings, hydro power, and nuclear industries.
- A high level of proficiency with current seismic hazard software applications, including OpenQuake, HAZ45, and / or NSHMP-HAZ.
- Working knowledge of current Canadian and U.S. national seismic hazard models.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
- Leadership, analytical, project management, and business development skills.
Position Requirements
Drug & Alcohol Testing

The policy states that an employee may be required to take a drug and alcohol test prior to engaging in field work. This testing could be requested within an employees first week or in the future, as required.
It is important to note that some clients also require random drug and alcohol testing, and / or testing in the event of a health and safety accident or incident.
Drivers License
BGC requires that employees have a valid driver's license, and that employees can drive a field pickup truck. Upon hiring, BGC will require a drivers abstract to allow for a safety review of your driving history.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $105,000 - $160,000 CAD per annum, however base pay will be commensurate with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
BGC's compensation package also includes a training allowance and a comprehensive medical and dental plan.
