The Women and Gender Studies Institute (WGSI) in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Black Cultural Studies.

The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025.

We seek candidates whose work engages with transnational feminism and Black Feminist Studies / traditions and demonstrates interdisciplinary strengths in some of the following areas : Queer and Trans Studies, Masculinities, Ecologies, Black and African Diaspora Studies, Disability Studies, Science and Technology Studies, Media and Digital Studies.

Applicants must have earned a PhD in Women and Gender Studies or a related area in the humanities or interpretive social sciences, and have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths . The successful candidate will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research, and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

  • Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked, field relevant, and peer-reviewed journals;
  • the submitted research statement outlining current and future research interests; presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades;

and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Experience teaching across interdisciplinary boundaries is strongly preferred. Evidence of excellence in teaching and research supervision will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier that outlines past experience and includes a teaching statement outlining teaching philosophy and plans for future teaching, sample course syllabi, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference.

We especially welcome applications from candidates with a strong record of and commitment to academic leadership and research supervision.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Women and Gender Studies Institute (WGSI) is an international leader in transnational feminist studies, recognised for its interdisciplinary research, diverse faculty, and community-based engagement.

For the past 40 years, WGSI has trained students to think about the entanglements of gender, race and sexuality. Teaching and scholarship at the WGSI address how colonialisms, national borders, Indigenous resurgence, labour, and migration shape life, knowledge, and politics.
