As a Lead Bistro Cook in the Facilities department, you’ll be responsible for the proper and effective operation of the Bistro.
This includes planning healthy menus, managing the inventory, placing orders, preparing meals, making recommendations regarding food pricing, and serving customers.
Responsibilities also include ensuring that industry standards and guidelines are applied and strictly followed by all Bistro staff.
What does your typical day look like?
- Plan and propose a variety of interesting and healthy menus / recipes that are cost effective;
- Maintain accurate inventories to ensure appropriate stocking levels and proper rotation of food items;
- Plan and place orders in a timely and cost-effective manner;
- Ensure strict adherence to industry standards and guidelines in regard to cleaning and organization of all storage areas, work areas and all equipment (e.
- g., freezer, refrigerator, etc.);
- Prepare products quickly and accurately, while meeting or exceeding industry and food safety standards for preparation, storage, and serving of food;
- Operate and maintain food / drink / treat related equipment and registers properly and safely;
- Initiate food service preparations and catering for meetings, Monthly Meals, Wellness snacks, etc.;
- Assist with training of kitchen personnel;
- Record food temperatures, production, and waste;
- Keep entire work area clean and sanitary throughout shift and assist with end of day cleaning;
- Inform Manager promptly of all problems or unusual matters of significance.
What skills and experience are we looking for?
- Excellent customer service skills including strong verbal communication skills, exhibit good manners, proper personal hygiene, positive attitude, and promptness;
- Ability to perform under pressure including moving and responding quickly for long periods of time;
- Working knowledge of legal and process requirements for serving food;
- Basic math skills and ability to handle money and operate a point-of-sale system;
- Ability to work in a standing position for long periods of time (up to 5 hours);
- Ability to reach, bend, stoop and frequently lift up to 25 pounds;
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds at most;
- Hygiene and food safety certification from the MAPAQ (Ministère de l’Agriculture, Pêcheries et Alimentation du Québec) is an asset.
- Understanding of organic, gluten-free, vegan ingredients and meat options.
- Good time management skills;
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines;
- Knowledge of food cost controls, inventory, and ordering produce.
