Your previous experience in microbiology has endowed you with a specialized knowledge and understanding of the intricacies involved in managing a laboratory of this caliber.
In addition to Sinai Health and UHN, the lab supports microbiology testing for Women’s College Hospital, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Baycrest, among others.
Moreover, as we endeavor to meet the demands of the diverse patient populations for these organizations, our lab consistently integrates new tests, lab equipment, and automation.
Your skill set also encompasses project planning, critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving. Given the size and high volume of our laboratory, you will employ these abilities on a daily basis to fulfill our operational requirements.
About the Department of Microbiology :
A collaborative laboratory operation between Mount Sinai Hospital and the University Health Network (UHN), The Department of Microbiology is recognized locally and nationally as a leader in microbiology.
As a team driven by innovation, we are able to offer the full range of high quality microbiology services, from routine cultures and susceptibility testing to molecular diagnostic testing.
New assays are continually being developed by our medical and scientific staff in response to clinical and research needs.
We are a prime reference center for both hospital and private sector laboratories. We offer state-of-the-art diagnostic services, methods development, research, and education.
In this role you will :
- Be responsible for the overall operations of the Microbiology laboratory, including managing and directly supervising a large number of staff to ensure efficient and effective services to users.
- Monitor service delivery, utilization management, and test turnaround times to ensure targets and clinical needs are met for timely patient management.
- Coach, counsel and encourage staff to reach their full potential.
- Work with the Senior Director to prepare operating budgets, forecast staffing requirements, determine and prioritize capital needs, monitor workload and efficiency measures, prepare business cases.
- Recruit and hire qualified staff for this highly unionized team, while ensuring these newly hired staff are appropriately trained and meet expected competency requirements
- Ensure compliance to all regulatory, legislated and accreditation standards or requirements.
- Steward the quality management system, investigate and review incidents, oversee internal audits, and monitor quality indicators.
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders regarding service delivery, updates, changes, and new protocols.
- Monitor monthly expenses to ensure appropriate and efficient use of resources; prepare monthly variance reports to Finance.
- Work with manufacturers’ of instrumentation, reagents, consumables and software to ensure integrity of testing, reliability of results.
Job Requirements
Mandatory
- Licensed in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologist in Ontario (CMLTO)
- A minimum of 5 years of proven experience in laboratory operations, showcasing a track record of progressively assuming greater responsibilities and accountability in previous roles Applicants with proven equivalent recent and related training and experience may be considered
- Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field from an accredited educational institution

- Demonstrated leadership experience
- Experience providing mentorship and staff training
