The Associate Portfolio Manager will join an experienced and dynamic team that builds and manages exchange traded funds (ETFs), mutual funds and institutional mandates, along with managing one of the largest option overlay strategies in Canada.

The role will focus on equity and derivative-overlay ETF strategies, and will be responsible for management of non-indexed ETFs across Canadian and International mandates.

The Associate Portfolio Manager's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, portfolio management of equity and derivative based ETFs, derivatives trading, modelling and implementing equity rebalances, product design, and interacting with other market participants in the ETF ecosystem.

In addition to portfolio management responsibilities, the successful candidate will also contribute to performance and quantitative attribution analysis, client focused commentary and other sales support activities, to support the overall ETF product offering within BMO GAM.

Key Dimensions :

1) Investment Management - Non-Index ETFs

  • Responsible for the day to day management of a defined set of equity and derivatives-based ETFs
  • Responsible for modelling and trading equity option trades based on market dynamics, taking into account the overall pricing of the volatility market, and company and macro risks
  • Maintain and review equity models and identify opportunities to improve them
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of marketplace dynamics, including sources of ETF, equity, and option liquidity
  • Build a trading strategy for any fund rebalances and portfolio transitions to minimize market impact and tracking
  • Collaborate with equity trading desk to effectively plan equity rebalances required
  • Monitor corporate actions and decide on best course of action
  • Currency Hedging - Support the team during monthly hedge roll adjustments
  • Demonstrates strong modelling skills in enhancement of current framework and innovation of new solutions.
  • Manages, evaluates and monitors performance of the designated portfolio in alignment with investment objectives and client parameters based on the designated portfolio management discipline (e.

g., equity, fixed income, quantitative, etc.).

  • Ability to program backtests and run ad-hoc analysis to support and improve existing and new portfolio construction methodologies
  • Aid in the analysis of performance and investment decisions to defend to senior investment committee
  • Support broader equity ETF portfolio management team by backing up on other index-based or institutional mandates as needed
  • Periodic investment commentaries to support both business development, as well as regulatory requirements
  • Provide input and develop rational for new product launches. Working with PM team or index provider in the designing or engineering of new products

2) Trading - Derivatives

  • Support execution of equity options, futures, OTC derivatives trading across multiple geographic regions
  • Work with other portfolio managers to coordinate and execute derivative trades
  • Maintain contacts and knowledge of the equity option and other derivative marketplaces
  • Continuously improving the operational efficiencies of the PM / Trading process

3) Sales / Client Service

  • Function as subject matter expert to support sales initiatives to drive asset growth
  • Foster a highly integrated and collaborative partnership with the sales team to deliver exceptional client service, through delivery of timely and insightful commentary, support and ETF analysis
  • Support products through education and sales
  • Support the construction of PR and media messaging as the subject matter expert for ETFs as opportunities arise
  • Promote BMO ETFs both externally and internally
  • Assist in providing analysis and building presentations for client meetings and sales presentations with the sales team

4) Research / Investment Commentary

  • Maintain a high level of knowledge of Equity and Derivative markets
  • Stay on top of the best industry practice on portfolio construction and management
  • Provide investment analysis and commentary to the portfolio management and sales teams
  • Provide investment analysis on new product launches
  • Write commentaries and regulatory disclosure documentation

5) Risk Management & Compliance

  • Maintain the highest fiduciary duty when representing and acting in our clients' interests
  • Continuously pursue and identify potential risk within our business and processes
  • Eliminate, where possible, manual processes
  • Automate and build systems that reduce operational risk
  • Ensure controls are in place and are being followed
  • Join a culture that continuously looks to mitigate operational risk

Qualifications :

  • University graduate in Commerce, Business, Engineering, Mathematics or Economics and may have a post graduate degree
  • CFA Charterholder, CIM, or working towards
  • A minimum 3-5 years of investment industry experience
  • Strong programming skills in Python, R, MATLAB and / or other languages required.
  • Equity derivatives experience is an asset, including options licensing
  • Experience in macroeconomic research and a familiarity with writing regular commentaries and strategy reports
  • Excellent working knowledge of global financial markets, investment management, products and marketing
  • Technical proficiency gained through education and / or business experience.

Compensation and Benefits :

$76,300.00 - $142,100.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure.

Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group's expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group's total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
