Reporting to Foreman, a Paver Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the asphalt paver. This position operates paving machines to spread and level hot mix paving material on subgrade highways and streets with the aid of stakes and level gauges to ensure the mix is placed to the proper grade and thickness.
General Responsibilities :
- Operate a paver and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment.
- Preheat a paving screed before the placement of asphalt; monitor and control the temperature settings of the asphalt mixture.
- Manually light burners to start hearing units of a paver and regulate screed temperature.
- Operate paver controls to lower the screed auger, control the hopper, and navigate the direction of a paver.
- Align a paving machine into position when receiving asphalt by dump truck and maintain a constant flow of asphalt into the hopper;
ease the paver forward, safely pushing the dump truck along the construction surface.
- Observe the distribution of paving materials along the screed and control the direction of the screed to eliminate voids at curbs and joints.
- Line pavers appropriately to the work area and ensure proper application of the asphalt, smoothing it evenly to the desired height, width, and depth.
- Attach extensions to the screed to adjust the width.
- Regulate the temperature of the asphalt flowing from the hopper.
- Train new employees in the safe and efficient operation of a paver.
- Operate other heavy equipment and other construction-related duties as required.
The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following :
Qualifications & Experience
- High School Diploma or is preferred.
- 3 to 5 years’ experience as a Paving Operator is required.
- Valid Class 5 Operator’s License; a clean Driver Abstract.
- Knowledge of road construction materials, road construction processes, and industry requirements.
- Understanding of computerized controls and electronics.
- Ability to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. regularly.
- Willingness to work out of town and in remote locations, as required.
- Willingness to work overtime, as required.
