The Ktunaxa Nation Council has an opportunity for Referrals Coordinator in Cranbrook BC. Reporting to the Manager, Natural Resource Stewardship, this position ensures Ktunaxa aboriginal title, rights and interests, including stewardship principles, are protected and enhanced in any regulatory decision-making processes. These responsibilities are to the extent possible within reasonable regulatory decision-making timelines.
The position also supports the operations of the KNC Referral Management System by coordinating referral responses from KNC and Ktunaxa First Nation staff and contractors, identifying where more information is required through additional fieldwork, studies or information requests and supporting GIS / spatial and other data needs for referral review.
The incumbent may undertake / lead or develop field studies required to provide a more fulsome referral response to protect or mitigate impacts to Ktunaxa rights and title.
This is a full-time permanent position with full benefits. Salary range for this position - $76,701 – $87,074.
Key Responsibilities
Project Coordination
- Responsible for the effective coordination of staff involved in relevant referral / land use application permitting projects; ensures that comprehensive responses are provided to the external based on Ktunaxa aboriginal title, rights and interests including stewardship principles.
- Provides significant input into government regulatory schedules.
- Coordinates data gathering and fieldwork pertaining to relevant projects including use and occupancy, archival, biophysical, archaeological, etc.
- The incumbent has a direct effect on the tone and collaborative working relationships with provincial and federal governments as well as project proponents.
Reporting
Maintains detailed record of data collected (spatial, research, reporting) pertaining to referrals / land use applications.At the direction of the Manager, Natural Resources Stewardship, prepares and presents reports and briefings to citizen meetings (band and Nation level), Lands and Resources Council and community chief and council meetings.Financial
With guidance from the Manager, develops and monitors budgets pertaining to projects the incumbent is involved with.Responsible for accuracy of paperwork (travel claims, expense claims, POs, time tracking) related to projects the incumbent is involved with.At the direction of the Manager, develops funding proposals and position / contractor descriptions to support relevant projects.Information
The Referrals Coordinator supports the GIS / Spatial data needs within the referral management system including : uploading new data layers, ensuring field data collected is appropriately managed and stored.The incumbent stewards and facilitates relevant information flow between sectors, working groups, committees, Lands staff and consultants.The Coordinator anticipates, organizes schedules and manages the flow and storage and management of information and numerous documents associated with their assigned projects.

Bachelor Degree and completion of professional designation.Bachelor’s degree (BA or BSc) in a natural resource management or related discipline with relevant experience is preferred.A Technical Diploma with relevant experience will also be considered.Member in good standing of a professional association (e.g. RPF, RPBio, PAg) is an asset.Experience / Expertise
One to three years of job related experience.Strong technical knowledge with the ability to communicate technically in layman’s terms.Project management and coordination experience.Budget management experience.Understanding of GIS / Spatial data collection and uses.Environmental field work related experience (i.e. forestry, archaeology, aquatic, etc.).Extensive experience working in a First Nations government or with First Nations.Knowledge of natural resource industries (mining, forestry, hydro).Knowledge of British Columbia permitting requirements within relevant Ministries (i.e. Ministry of Mines, Environment, Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, etc.).Knowledge of the consultation and accommodation legal framework associated with Aboriginal rights.The Ktunaxa Nation Council is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for all Employees and the People, Communities, and Bands that we serve.
