Position Details

The Department of Philosophy invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2024 or later, subject to budgetary approval.

Hiring salary will range from $79,132 to $92,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.The successful applicant will have a Ph.

D. (or be ABD with a set defense date) in philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, or epistemology. Filling more than one of these areas of specialization would be an asset, but we are open to considering all combinations that include at least one.

We seek applicants with a demonstrated ability of producing high-quality research, and potential for securing research funding.

The successful candidate will show clear evidence of success or potential with respect to both teaching and departmental and university service.

In addition, we will consider it an asset if applicants can demonstrate their ability to forge interdisciplinary collaborations and engage with the community.

The successful applicant will teach courses in their areas of research and supervise graduate students. They will also be expected to contribute more broadly to the Department’s teaching needs at all levels, in areas including Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Language, Epistemology, Logic / Critical Thinking, Environmental Philosophy, and Philosophy of AI.

The ability to teach in these areas from a non-Western perspective would be of value. The Department of Philosophy is developing its ability to support majors in the University’s Neuroscience program;

demonstrated ability to contribute to this objective will be considered a strength.The ability to fill any or several of those needs will be an asset, but candidates with teaching strengths outside these areas are encouraged to demonstrate their potential for developing the Department’s curriculum in a way that is beneficial to its students and the University as a whole.

Our Department : The Department of Philosophy has an energetic and enthusiastic group of faculty members with research and teaching strengths in Social and Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Law, Logic, Argumentation Theory, Pragmatism, Ethics, and Feminist Philosophy.

We have a vibrant student culture, a yearly undergraduate conference, and an active philosophy club that has frequent philosophy discussions and maintains its own undergraduate philosophy room.

Additionally, the Department has a growing M.A. program that we are committed to diversifying and expanding in the coming years.

One letter of reference and names for two more referees are required. Letter writers for long-listed candidates will be contacted and given 10 days to submit their letters.

Review of applications will begin May 1st, 2024; the search will remain open until the position is filled and we encourage applications beyond May 1st.
