MAKING AN IMPACT
As a member of the Strategic Communications team at the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), the Communications Coordinator plays a key role in raising awareness of CCS’s mission work and impact across Canada. Serving as the initial point of contact for national media inquiries, this role works directly with journalists, internal subject matter experts, vendors to support meaningful storytelling that advances CCS’s priorities. Reporting to the Sr. Communications Manager, the coordinator provides communications support across thought leadership initiatives, mission-driven campaigns and occasional issues management. This includes but is not limited to proactive and reactive media relations, media monitoring, media training, tracking and evaluating metrics, writing and content development and project coordination.

This role is ideal for a results-driven communicator with strong attention to detail, who is eager to build relationships with media. The successful candidate is a strong writer, highly organized with a solid understanding of the Canadian media landscape and communications fundamentals that drive awareness and engagement.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

  • Act as first point of contact on behalf of CCS for nationwide media and manage incoming requests with the oversight of the Sr. Communications Manager
  • Monitor CCS media coverage and proactively identify emerging trends for timely newsjacking opportunities
  • Analyze media coverage and develop media reports to demonstrate strategic effectiveness of communications about CCS initiatives
  • Maintain strong relationships with key Canadian journalists
  • Coordinate and manage media interviews and training for internal and external subject matter experts
  • Work with Sr. Communications Manager to respond to public inquiries in a timely and professional manner, collaborating with internal experts and stakeholders for information and fact-checking
  • Support the execution of executive thought leadership strategies
  • Support the development of media releases, pitches, op-eds and bylines
  • Act as primary contact for media vendors and oversee all vendor invoices for the Communications team
  • Post content to cancer.ca press page and the newswire service as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, public relations, journalism or related field and minimum 1 year of experience in media relations or communications, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Understanding of the Canadian media landscape and emerging trends as well as experience in deploying communications and public relations strategies and tactics, including working with media
  • Experience with media monitoring (Meltwater and Cision), reporting and analysis
  • Demonstrated flexibility, resourcefulness, resiliency and the willingness and capacity to produce quality results under pressure and to deadline
  • Superb organizational, project and time management, problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Exceptional oral and written skills
  • Positive, can-do attitude along with ability to self-motivate, work well independently and contribute to the positive culture of the team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build and sustain positive relationships
  • Proven ability to present creative solutions to challenges and issues management
  • Proficiency in Microsoft tools including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams as well as SharePoint and Copilot
  • Experience in a health-related environment, cancer organization, media agency or non-profit setting is an asset
  • English is required; French/Bilingualism (French /English) is an asset due to the organization’s nationwide operations.
