What do you offer?

The Lead Instructor plays a critical role in delivering high-quality technical training, ensuring that participants gain the necessary skills and certifications to successfully transition into employment. This position is responsible for curriculum design, instruction, mentorship of technical instructors, and alignment of training with industry standards and employer expectations. The Lead Instructor will directly oversee Technical Instructors in YMCA Trades Technical Training Programs to ensure consistency and quality across all training areas. Additionally, the Lead Instructor will support efforts to engage employers, advisory committees, and community partners to enhance program effectiveness and sustainability. The curriculum can include aspects of carpentry, drywall taping & finishing, painting, tiling, flooring installation, insulation, window & door installation, and other home renovation and green building activities.

Some of the tasks of this position include:

  • Provide supervision and mentorship to Technical Instructors and program participants, fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment that encourages full participation.
  • Promptly respond to staff and students' technical inquiries and safety concerns, escalating issues to the Director when necessary.
  • Oversee and maintain workshop equipment, ensuring regular upkeep and inventory management to support effective training delivery.
  • Lead instruction in both theoretical and practical training through demonstrations, hands-on workshops, group discussions, and project-based learning.
  • Create and maintain a technical training schedule that integrates pre-employment training and industry engagement activities.
  • Support student work placements by collaborating with Employer Liaisons, assisting with placement logistics, and ensuring compliance with program objectives.

What qualifications and abilities are we looking for?

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent in a related field

Language

  • Fluent in English, oral and written
  • Other languages are an asset

Experience, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the construction, home renovation or green building industry
  • Solid understanding of all tools and techniques typically used in home construction or renovation job sites
  • Teaching/supervision experience in a trades related setting
  • Familiar with Skilled Trades Ontario and relevant policy and procedures
  • Advanced communication skills to ensure that technical information is effectively transmitted
  • Ability to bend, climb ladders, and lift loads up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to use hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
  • A Police Record check, not more than 6 months old is required.Police Records checks are reviewed on an individual basis and the offense(s) - if any - is considered in the decision‑making process in relation to the requirement of working with children, therefore not eliminating all candidates with a record from being offered a position.
  • Annually, staff must complete the mandatory training for the protection of Children & Youth and submit the certificate of completion.
