Job description

Located in Ottawa, the Association of Justice Counsel (AJC) is the exclusive bargaining agent for approximately 3,500 lawyers employed by the Government of Canada who work for the Department of Justice, the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, and various federal agencies, tribunals, and courts across the country. AJC members fulfill several crucial roles for the Government of Canada and the Canadian public as counsel for the Crown. The AJC's offices are located in Ottawa, while its members and the 41-member Governing Council that represents them are located throughout the country.

Reporting to the President and working under the strategic direction of the Executive Committee and Governing Council, the Executive Director serves as the senior staff leader of the Association of Justice Counsel (AJC) and is responsible for the overall management and administration of the organization. The Executive Director provides leadership to the senior management team and ensures implementation of the strategic priorities, policies, and objectives established by the Governing Council. Through executive oversight of the AJC’s operations, programs, services, and resources, the Executive Director supports the effective delivery of services to AJC members and the elected leadership while promoting sound governance, financial stewardship, organizational effectiveness, labour relations excellence, and stakeholder engagement.

As the ideal candidate, you are a lawyer in good standing with a Canadian law society and are fluently bilingual in English and French, with exceptional written and verbal communication skills. You bring significant executive leadership experience within a unionized environment, supported by expertise in labour law, labour relations, collective bargaining, and the federal labour relations framework. A collaborative leader, you have a demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing professional teams, build trust with staff and elected leadership, and navigate complex stakeholder environments with sound judgment and credibility. You are committed to the principles of the labour movement and have a proven ability to advocate effectively with governments, bargaining agents, and external partners while maintaining a strong internal focus on organizational effectiveness, employee engagement, and service excellence. Pragmatic, approachable, and resilient, you bring the energy and enthusiasm needed to strengthen workplace relationships, support organizational stability and succession planning, and guide the AJC through its next phase of growth and evolution.
