POSITION SUMMARY

In keeping with the Mission Statement of the hospital and the nursing department the Registered Nurse Practical is responsible for assessing planning implementing and evaluating nursing care for individual clients and families. The nurse assigned to this position is required to function independently and in conjunction with the nurses physicians and the multidisciplinary team in the department to ensure that the clinics run efficiently. This position within Development and Rehabilitation will be supporting diagnostic clinics for children with suspected global developmental disabilities autism or physical disabilities as well as physiatry and orthopaedic clinics for children with physical disabilities.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Assess the patient (e.g. results from lab x-ray or pathology; status of drug; additional clinical nursing data; measurements; and collect specimens)
  • Deal compassionately with children/youth/adolescents and their families diagnosed with a variety of developmental and / or physical disabilities.
  • Development implementation and review of education resources/documents.
  • Coordinate care with other disciplines and community service providers. Provide instructions (written or oral) to clients and families as required.
  • Identify real and potential problems by intervening directly or referring to other health care professionals.
  • In person and telephone teaching and counselling of clients and families.
  • Participation in all clinic activities including triaging of clients pre clinic chart review telephone nursing assessment use of medical directives to order diagnostic imaging and any requested follow up post assessment
  • Continuous learning to develop expertise in the trained specialties
  • Maintain documentation according to CHEO policies and procedures.
  • Maintain equipment and report any malfunctions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Vulnerable Sector Check (Essential)
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses in Ontario (Essential)
  • Current BCLS (Essential)
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills (Essential)
  • Demonstrates the ability to participate as an active member of the health-care team (Essential)
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively in an oral and a written format with clients public colleagues and other health disciplines(Essential)
  • Demonstrates an understanding and a willingness to participate in self-evaluation (Essential)
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuous Quality Improvement (Essential)
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain clinic throughput by performing nursing functions such as rooming clients nursing assessment and documentation (Essential)
  • Bilingualism - French and English (Essential)
  • Pediatric experience (minimum 2 years) (Preferred)
  • Previous experience in a variety of outpatient ambulatory clinics (Preferred)

Effective March 29 2021 CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process. This process may include more varied and multidimensional testing such as a written test practical exam or other assessment.
