Job description

Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for over 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world. At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Ottawa office, supporting primarily federal government projects across a range of complex building and infrastructure sectors, including healthcare, laboratories, commercial, higher education, aviation, and rail.

This role offers a high degree of autonomy, with the successful candidate leading electrical design efforts locally in Ottawa while collaborating as needed with multidisciplinary teams in Montreal and Toronto.

The Opportunity

  • Lead the design and delivery of electrical systems on medium to large-scale, complex projects, with a strong focus on federal government work (Design electrical systems, including power, lighting, fire alarm, grounding, and electrical interconnection systems, as well as surge protection systems).
  • Act as the lead electrical designer, taking ownership of technical quality, coordination, and delivery.
  • Work independently on Ottawa-based projects while collaborating with regional teams as required.
  • Prepare drawings, specifications, technical reports, and presentation materials.
  • Present technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Maintain strong client relationships, supporting successful project delivery and repeat business.
  • Uphold quality standards, support commercial metrics, and contribute to overall project performance.
  • Participate in local professional associations and contribute to the professional community.
  • Perform calculations for electrical systems, including load analysis, short-circuit analysis, voltage drop calculations, and photometric calculations.
  • Select electrical equipment and coordinate the selection and specifications of this equipment with relevant suppliers.
  • Prepare contract documents describing the design of electrical systems and write technical design statements.
  • Contribute to the development of technical specifications.
  • Coordinate work with architects, contractors, and equipment suppliers.
  • Coordinate across multiple disciplines to deliver holistic, results-oriented projects.

Is this role right for you?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required.
  • At least 6 years of electrical engineering experience designing building or infrastructure electrical systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and lead the electrical discipline on projects.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary team environments.
  • Proficiency with 3D BIM tools, preferably Revit MEP.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable Canadian standards and codes.
  • Ability to establish and effectively manage priorities and deadlines; strong organizational skills required for our fast-paced and constantly evolving environment.
  • Excellent writing skills to communicate electrical system design concepts and strategies both internally and externally.
  • Ability to present technical content to both specialized and non-specialist audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineering (PE / P.Eng) license is highly preferred.
  • Experience with power system modeling using SKM, Etap, or similar software.
  • Experience working on federal government projects or within regulated project environments.
  • Ability to communicate in French is preferred but not required.Ottawa operates in a bilingual environment, and French language skills are an asset for collaboration on Montreal-based projects.
