POSITION SUMMARY

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of CSIO is a senior leader in the field of clinical sport and exercise medicine with expertise and experience in the care of high-performance athletes at the Olympic and Paralympic level.

The CMO provides strategic leadership at a national level, contributing to the development and maintenance of best-possible systems and standards for health care of Canadian high-performance athletes, including relevant personnel, facilities, systems, policies and protocols.

The CMO is also responsible for the strategic leadership of sport medicine services for athletes training at or affiliated with CSIO and may provide direct medical care services to partnered National Sport Organizations and/or targeted CSIO-affiliated athletes.

Role Structure & Commitment

This position is offered as a part‑time independent contractor role, designed to provide senior clinical leadership and system‑level expertise while remaining compatible with active clinical practice or other professional commitments.

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 8 days per month, equivalent to 12-16 hours per week
  • Includes a minimum of one (1) full day per week (8 hours) in person at the CSIO Head Office in the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre
  • Remaining hours may be scheduled flexibly, based on agreed priorities and workplans

Nature of the Role

  • The Chief Medical Officer serves as a senior clinical and strategic leader, with responsibility for medical governance, standards, and system‑level influence
  • The role does not include direct people management or operational oversight of day‑to‑day service delivery

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

National Responsibilities

Health Care Policies

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of system-wide policies intended to foster excellence in preventive and reactive health care of Canadian high-performance athletes.

Standardized Care Protocols

  • Contribute to, and/or lead the development of standardized protocols or guidelines for the care of Canadian high-performance athletes.
  • Support the dissemination of standardized care protocols to CSIO, our partnered NSOs and PSOs, and the Ontario sport medicine community in general.

Health Information Systems

  • Lead and/or participate in the development of IT solutions for purposes related to health care for Canadian high-performance athletes (i.e. AMS and EMR solutions), while complying with all applicable provincial regulations regarding privacy of health information and consent required to communicate such information
  • Facilitate systemic monitoring and management of athlete health and performance capacity by NSOs and their ISTs

Sport Physician Development

  • Support the development and implementation of a high-performance pathway for medical professionals
  • Where appropriate, develop and provide opportunities to mentor sport physicians in the high-performance pathway for sport medicine

Planning & Advisory Meetings

  • Attend and contribute to sport medicine advisory council (SMAC) meetings and sport medicine discipline meetings
  • Attend and contribute to conferences and events relevant to the national and regional high performance sport medicine community, such as the SPIN Summit or CASEM Annual Scientific Symposium

Major Games Prep

  • Assist multi-sport Games (i.e. Olympic, Paralympic, Pan/Parapan-American,) CMOs and Medical Mission Managers with planning and delivery of excellent health care for Canadian athletes at those Games
  • Support pre-Games care of athletes affiliated with CSIO who have qualified or are potentially eligible to qualify for these Games

CSIO Responsibilities

Policies, Procedures, and Protocols

  • Implement and monitor local CSIO compliance with relevant provincial laws and regulations
  • Ensure CSIO practices follow standardized care protocols or guidelines developed and adopted nationally or locally
  • Contribute to CSIO health-related policies e.g., Emergency Action Plan, etc.
  • Ensure CSIO medical and paramedical professionals employed by or contracted by CSIO meet the requirements or recommendations for education, experience and accreditation for caregivers to Canadian high-performance athletes

Health Performance Team

  • Work in conjunction with Senior Director, Sport Performance, and Senior Manager, Health Performance to lead in the creation, implementation, monitoring, and evolution of a ‘CSIO Sport Medicine strategy’.
  • Work in conjunction with Senior Director, Sport Performance, and Senior Manager, Health Performance, and Mental Health Lead to support the implementation, monitoring, and evolution of the ‘CSIO Mental Health Strategy’.
  • Work with the Senior Manager, Health Performance on sport medicine partnerships, including partnering with Athletes Care.
  • Work in conjunction with the Senior Manager, Health Performance to implement a performance-based medical monitoring framework for CSIO
  • Assist the Senior Director, Sport Performance, and Senior Manager, Health Performance in all matters as necessary in relation to sport medicine.
  • Provide consultation/clinical care for CSIO athletes when required
  • Provide Sport Medicine services to assigned National and/or Provincial Sport Organizations as a member of their Integrated Support Team(s)
  • When requested, provide guidance to National Sport Organizations leaders (High Performance Directors, CMOs, Paramedical Staff) to improve health outcomes within the sport
  • Provide advisement and recommendations on the medical support program to Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative (OHPSI) sports and athletes
  • Work with the Senior Manager, Health Performance on sport medicine partnerships, including partnering with Athletes Care.
  • Deliver lectures, presentations, or conduct other educational or promotional sessions on behalf of the CSIO to relevant groups provincially, nationally, and internationally

Company

  • Develop and maintain an effective working relationship with the CEO.
  • Support risk management planning and ensure risk management best practices are adhered to.
  • When requested, deliver presentations to CSIO staff on relevant sport medicine topics
  • Provide advice and direction to the CEO on sports medicine matters as requested
