The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus.

The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Tutoring Coordinator, Assistant Coordinator and the Senior Tutors, AMS Tutors uphold the mandate of AMS Tutoring by supporting students' academic success.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

Group Tutors work in cooperation with AMS Tutoring and its partners, including the Chapman Learning Commons, Beyond Tomorrow Scholar’s Program (BTSP), World University Service of Canada (WUSC), and Undergraduate Societies.

AMS Tutors are also hired to conduct 1-on-1 appointment tutoring with students through the Nimbus tutoring app.

Group Tutors will report to Senior Tutors while onsite as well as the Tutoring Coordinator and Assistant Tutoring Coordinator for general inquiries and concerns.

Appointment Tutors will report directly to the Assistant Tutoring Coordinator and Tutoring Coordinator as required.

Any upper year level quantitative methods course or subject specific statistics courses will be considered as an asset (e.

g. BIOL 300, POLI 380, ECON 325 / 326, etc.)

WORK PERFORMED BASIC DUTIES AND EXPECTATIONS

Tutoring Provide tutoring to UBC students seeking academic assistance. Ability to thoroughly and clearly explain concepts to students in field of specialty in a calm and respectful manner.

Be familiar with the tutoring and learning support services available in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and across UBC Campus, including the Chapman Learning Commons Help Desk, Writing Centre, Math Learning Centre, and faculty-based tutoring programs, and refer users accordingly.

Communication Communicate concerns with the Senior Tutors, Tutoring Coordinator, and Assistant Coordinator when they arise.

Respond to Slack messages / emails in a timely fashion.For Appointment Tutoring : Have and maintain a Nimbus profile and respond to appointment requirements in a timely fashion.

Report any incidents that may occur to the Senior Tutors, Tutoring Coordinator, and Assistant Coordinator as soon as possible.

Help promote AMS Tutoring to the student body.

  • Data Collection Assist Senior Tutors to ensure that students sign in and out of AMS Tutoring sessions as per schedule.
  • Staff Training and Development Attend and participate fully in all training sessions.

ON-GOING DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

  • Development in areas including time management, communication in written or verbal form, and tutoring skills.
  • Opportunities to network with various staff members of the AMS.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Must currently be a registered UBC student with a minimum 80% in the course(s) they wish to tutor. Concessions can be made for students hovering between 75-80% in a course based on interview performance
  • A university transcript must be submitted alongside a resume and cover letter An informal transcript from the Student Service Centre or Workday will be accepted Transcripts from other post-secondary institutions and credit-granting high school programs (IB, AP, A-Levels) are also accepted.
  • Previous tutoring experience is an asset.
  • Proficiency in multiple languages is an asset.
  • Be an enthusiastic team player with a strong work ethic and have a growth mindset.
  • Able to work independently with little supervision.
  • Understanding and patience when working with others.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT

January 2025 April 2025, with the possibility for extension.

REMUNERATION

AMS Group Tutors will earn an hourly wage of $17.85. AMS Appointment Tutors will earn an hourly wage of $26.90.

Group Tutors are expected to work at least one 3-hour shift a week (Monday to Thursday from 4-7 pm), with additional hours dependent on the scheduling needs of AMS Tutoring.

Additionally, group tutors will be paid $17.85 for time devoted to staff meetings and mandatory training sessions, and $26.

90 for review sessions. Weekly hours for appointment tutoring vary depending on demand.

AMS Tutoring is an academic support service offered by the UBC Alma Mater Society, the student society of UBC Vancouver representing all students at UBC's Vancouver campus and the affiliated colleges.

Aimed at promoting high-quality student learning, AMS Tutoring helps with the transition from high school to university by offering paid appointment and free peer tutoring services that guide students to becoming better and more independent learners.

The peer tutors teach specific subject areas, catering to courses that are offered at first- and second-year levels.
