The Canadian Economic Analysis Department (CEA) provides high-quality economic analysis, projections and research to support the Bank’s monetary policy function. Within CEA, the mandate of the Canadian Economic Studies (CES) division is twofold: (i) produce a measure of Canadian potential output based on thoughtful and novel analysis of Canadian productivity growth, labour markets and investment; and (ii) conduct policy analysis and research that will lead to a better understanding of structural change and longer term trends in the Canadian economy, as well as their relevance for Canada’s economic outlook and monetary policy. CES also plays an active role in formulating the Bank’s policy advice through analytical notes, briefings and leading-edge research and communicating monetary policy.

What you will do
You will develop leading-edge research ideas and produce impactful research papers that help shape the Bank’s research agenda and policy analysis in areas related to monetary policy and support CEA in providing sound monetary-policy advice. You will collaborate with researchers and policy experts across the Bank and other organizations (eg outside academics, international agencies, and other central banks) to share knowledge and produce and disseminate research. Under the leadership of the Director, you will also contribute to in-depth, high-quality policy analysis on the structural drivers of Canada’s economic growth, including productivity growth, investment, innovation, business dynamism, labour supply and other factors shaping the economy’s supply. You will analyze and interpret longer-term macroeconomic developments and their implications for the Canadian economy and contribute to the development and enhancement of our policy modelling framework. You will also contribute to the Bank's assessment of potential output, prepare analytical notes for senior management and deliver briefings in your areas of subject-matter expertise.

What you need to succeed
You have experience leading rigorous policy analysis and research of economic developments and translating complex findings into clear, actionable insights for a variety of audiences. You are comfortable engaging with senior-level professionals contributing to high-level discussions and delivering effective presentations. You demonstrate commitment to continuous learning and self-development.

You also have the ability to:

• fields of expertise: experience conducting analysis and research on productivity, potential output, innovation, investment, business dynamism, or other drivers of long-run economic growth.
• analytical and technical skills: strong quantitative and empirical skills, e.g. experience developing or applying macroeconomic, structural, or forecasting models for policy analysis.
• strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyze complex economic and financial information using empirical and/or modelling skills.
• research skills: undertake in-depth and high-quality research projects that are publishable in top-tier, peer-reviewed academic journals
• writing skills: produce effective written documents in a style and form likely to appeal to and influence the intended audience
• oral communication and presentation skills: make effective, well-structured presentations adapted to the intended audience, inside or outside the Bank, and to communicate effectively with others by demonstrating active listening skills and conveying information clearly
• teamwork and collaboration: work independently and collaboratively to conduct insightful economic analysis and develop sound policy advice.
• innovation: create new insights, devise novel approaches and make innovative decisions through research

Nice-to-have

• Experience analyzing and manipulating firm-level micro data.
• Knowledge of Canadian data sources and concepts related to labour market trends and productivity.
• Advanced knowledge of MATLAB, Julia, R, Stata, Python or similar econometrics programs, experience in use of AI tools.

Your education and experience
This position requires a PhD degree in economics or finance. In exceptional circumstances, an equivalent combination of a PhD and research experience in an area of current particular relevance or interest to the Bank not listed above may be considered. Prior experience in economic or financial analysis or in a field related to policy development is an asset.

Language requirement

The Bank’s work environment is conducive to the use of both of Canada’s official languages - English and French. Hybrid Work Model
The Bank offers work arrangements that provide employees with flexibility, enable high-performing teams, and support an excellent workplace culture. Most employees can telework from home for a portion of each month as part of the Bank’s hybrid work model, and they are expected on site at the Bank location a minimum of 12 days per month to help build connections between colleagues. You must live in Canada, and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.

Senior Economist

• Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $111,051 to $130,649 (job grade 17).
• The Bank offers an incentive for successfully meeting expectations, at 7 to 10% of your base salary. The Bank offers additional performance pay (5%) for those who exceed expectations. Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
