The Commercial Lines Auto Underwriting Specialist is responsible for acting as an underwriting resource for complex risks to fellow underwriters while maintaining a profitable book of business with assigned broker partners.
What you will do :
- Act as a resource on risks outside of the authority level of more junior Underwriters, and authorize risks within own established authority levels.
- Negotiate renewal terms for the retention of business
- Utilize loss control and risk management practices in the underwriting process.
- Respond to inquiries from brokers regarding modification to policy files in a prompt and efficient manner.
- Work with brokers to develop new business.
- Develop and maintain excellent broker relationships and management of assigned broker portfolio
- Provide above average customer service
- Participate in training as required including subject research, preparation of material and delivery of the training.
- Participate in the training and development of other Underwriting staff members, provide technical expertise and advice regarding products, systems and processes.
- Consult with senior specialist regarding unique or unusual risks to minimize adverse risk selection to maintain the quality and profitability of the portfolio, and refer all risks outside established authority level
- Participate in the introduction and communication of pricing, coverage and / or product changes in a timely manner.
- Help identify areas of concern regarding loss ratios, risk trends, or other discrepancies.
- Develop and maintain working knowledge of all Information Systems / Programs within
- Underwriting and Claims, and analyze / recommend improvements to work processes and procedures.
- Participate in audits as required.
- Participate in the development of Underwriting guidelines, procedures, and manuals
- Maintain knowledge of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes.
What you will bring :
- 7+ years of Commercial Lines Auto Underwriting experience
- CIP is preferred
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational and administration skills
- Highly motivated and enthusiastic
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to meet challenging deadlines and perform effectively under pressure
- Working knowledge of other functional areas (i.e. Claims, Risk Management, Accounting, etc.)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word & Excel), Lotus Notes, RTM, commercial lines computer systems and other related systems.
- Post-secondary education or equivalent combination of education
