CBC Montreal is looking for an Assignment Editor (regional). This is a Full-time permanent position.
Your role :
You will coordinate the work of our journalists assigned to regional coverage in Montreal and Quebec on all of our platforms : radio, digital publishing, video for web and TV.
You will determine story angles to pursue in event coverage and develop original content ideas. As an editorial leader in the newsroom, you will provide regular feedback to the field reporters to recognize great work and help people develop and excel.
Your role is to consult, plan, assign and coordinate newsgathering resources to cover the most relevant and impactful stories and events in compliance with CBC / Radio-Canada Journalistic Standards and Practices and in line with CBC Quebec’s goals and objectives.
This position requires someone with initiative, solid editorial judgment, leadership skills, a good contact network, bilingualism (English / French) and the ability to work well in a team under pressure while maintaining excellent working relationships with colleagues.
You can handle the demands of multiple priorities and deadlines and know how to get the best out of your colleagues.
You will work in the English newsroom of CBC Montreal with our team of journalists.
For reference purposes, and at the time of this posting, the Regional Assignment Editor shift is Monday-Friday, 6 : 00 AM-2 : 00 PM in office.
Job Responsibilities :
You will keep up with regional, national and international news stories through various sources.
If necessary, you will contact the media relations officers to obtain more information on a press conference or other media event.
You will decide whether the event deserves coverage.
You will encourage journalists to come up with their own story ideas.
You will choose which events will be covered during the day. You will draw up the assignment schedule.
You will attend planning meetings for day-to-day, upcoming and special-event coverage.
You will discuss the various events to be covered, express your opinions and consider those of the team.
You will inform the national assignment editor of local stories having a national angle or liable to take on national importance.
You will assign stories to journalists and coordinate their work. You will discuss with reporters which angles they should take and direct them accordingly.
You will also supply reporters with additional documentation, if necessary and inform them of what audio and video clips are available.
You will assign Camera Operators to shoots if needed.
If necessary, you will arrange Reporters’, Videojournalists’ and Camera Operators’ schedules to meet coverage needs.
You will coordinate the work of a Research Journalist or assignment assistant, as needed.- You will coordinate requests for collaboration on regional and national news and public affairs programs.
You will ensure that the required production resources are made available to the journalists.
You will closely follow events as they unfold. Be prepared to reassign journalists at any time.
Plan medium- and long-term assignments and create a bank of story ideas.
You may revise the form and content of the story. You may suggest or demand corrections and may refuse to allow a story to be broadcast.
You will also follow up with journalists after the broadcast
You will write intros, as needed.
Occasionally set up interviews for Reporters.
You will ensure that the items under your responsibility are ready on time for the various newscasts of the lineups. Also ensure that adequate human, budgetary and technical resources are available.
Carry out all other related tasks as needed.
We are looking for a candidate with the following :
A) Qualifications :
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
Five (5) years’ journalism experience or equivalent
B) Skills :
Extensive general knowledge
In-depth knowledge of current events and issues in Quebec
Ability to identify the concerns of the population
Fluent in the working language : English
Working knowledge of French,
Ability to work in a team environment
Keen sense of the news
In-depth knowledge of newsroom logistics (TV, Radio and Web)
Very good knowledge of storytelling techniques specific to each platform
Knowledge of production techniques
Advanced knowledge of digital platforms and social media; ability to keep up with best digital practices and technological tools / innovations
Ability to plan, organize and coordinate the day-to-day work of reporters so as to meet tight deadlines; ability to work well under pressure
Leadership and independence
Knowledge of production applications (Dalet, iNEWS, Avid) in use at CBC / Radio-Canada an asset -
Ability to develop and maintain a network of contacts
Knowledge of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices
