Manager, AI Governance – Information Technology

Alberta Blue Cross® is an Alberta based organization dedicated to delivering exceptional customer experience and community leadership. We’re committed to providing the best health coverage to over 1.8 million members and take an active role in promoting wellness. We believe in what we do—and place trust in our employees to deliver our vision.

Working at Alberta Blue Cross® means having a career where you’ll be recognized for your contributions. We value diversity, encourage our team members to maintain a healthy work‑life balance and provide opportunities for career growth.

OVERVIEW

We are looking for a strategic and collaborative Manager, AI Governance to lead the development and implementation of our AI governance practices. This role plays a pivotal part in fostering trust in our AI assets by ensuring they are responsibly developed and effectively governed. This role is central to aligning AI initiatives with our corporate objectives, organizational values, and regulatory requirements.

The successful candidate will design and operationalize AI governance frameworks, policies, and tools that enable the secure, compliant, and value‑driven use of AI and machine learning. In addition to governance leadership, this role leads stakeholder engagement through the AI Centre of Excellence and champions continuous learning and cross‑functional collaboration to enhance AI literacy and drive responsible adoption across the organization. The Manager, AI Governance, serves as a strategic partner to data, technology, legal, security and business teams, ensuring our AI systems reflect our commitment to ethical innovation and responsible technology leadership.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Establish and operationalize AI governance frameworks – develop and maintain comprehensive governance frameworks, including policies, procedures and best practices that promote the ethical, responsible and compliant use of AI technologies.
  • Integrate governance across the AI lifecycle – collaborate with cross‑functional teams to embed governance practices throughout the AI development and deployment lifecycle, ensuring consistency and accountability.
  • Ensure regulatory and ethical compliance – partner with legal, privacy and risk teams to ensure AI systems meet applicable laws, regulations and ethical standards.
  • Monitor and report on governance performance – prepare and deliver regular updates to senior leadership on the status of AI governance initiatives, including performance metrics, compliance status and risk management activities.
  • Support audits and assessments – facilitate regular reviews of AI systems and initiatives to validate adherence to governance standards and address any gaps or ethical concerns.
  • Maintain governance documentation and asset inventory – oversee the creation and ongoing management of governance documentation, including policies, standards and a centralized inventory of AI initiatives and assets.
  • Serve as governance and compliance liaison – act as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders on matters related to AI governance, compliance and responsible use.
  • Facilitate the AI Centre of Excellence – lead the coordination of the AI Centre of Excellence, fostering collaboration across a community of AI practitioners to drive strategic adoption and measurable business impact.
  • Engage with external partners and industry leaders – build and maintain relationships with academic institutions, industry bodies and regulatory organisations to stay informed on emerging trends, evolving governance frameworks and best practices in AI.
  • Anticipate and address emerging AI risks and opportunities – stay ahead of evolving AI trends, technologies and risks. Proactively assess implications and coordinate with accountable teams to define governance responses and policy positions.
  • Champion responsible enablement of AI innovation – balance governance and compliance with enablement by partnering with Learning & Development on AI literacy and evangelism, and across the enterprise to ensure governance frameworks support responsible experimentation, scalable deployment and business value realization.

WHAT YOU WILL HAVE

  • A degree in a relevant field such as Information Management, Computer Science, Information Technology, Law, Business, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years plus experience in AI governance or related fields, ideally within complex or regulated environments.
  • Proven ability to lead enterprise level initiatives, with a strong track record of aligning governance strategies to business objectives and driving measurable outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and operationalising governance policies, procedures and tools that support compliance, transparency and value creation.
  • Strong understanding of AI / ML technologies, governance frameworks, regulatory requirements and ethical considerations related to responsible AI use.
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across technical, business, legal and compliance teams.
  • Familiarity with global and industry specific regulations, standards and best practices related to AI, data privacy and digital ethics.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence across business and technical teams.
  • Leadership experience, encompassing building out new corporate functions and teams from scratch.
  • Demonstrated ability to stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies and best practices.
  • Proactively seeks out opportunities for professional development through courses, certifications, conferences or self‑directed learning.
  • Leadership experience in establishing and scaling new corporate functions and teams from the ground up.
  • This position will remain open until January 9, 2026.
