Job description

Senior Vice President of Technology (Halifax, NS. Remote eligible, ideally within Nova Scotia or New Brunswick)

Our client is a scaling technology-forward start-up with a product roadmap and market plan for a new AI-driven solution for the physical security domain and are expanding their team.

We are looking for an experienced and exceptional leader to join them on this journey and help them scale their technical operations from product development to market launch and beyond.

Role and Responsibilities

We are seeking a creative and data-driven Senior Vice President of Technology to lead engineering and technical operations. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will be a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for the technical vision and execution of a new market solution.

Collaborating closely with the Chief Product Officer and other leadership to translate the product vision into technical delivery, you'll have the opportunity to ensure that infrastructure and software development support rapid scaling and up-market expansion. Your responsibilities will include some very hands-on development (especially at first) as well as::

  • Strategic Technical Leadership: Planning, developing, and operating a holistic technology strategy that aligns with market needs, the product roadmap, and business objectives.
  • Team Evolution: Scaling, leading, mentoring, and growing an engaged, high-performing team of engineers and technical leads, focusing on both deliverables and long-term professional development.
  • Operational Excellence: Assessing and improving existing technical initiatives, while devising and advancing the optimization of physical and logical infrastructure.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Working in close partnership with customer, product and go-to-market teams to action feedback and innovatively solve problems.
  • Architecture & Quality: Defining the technical narrative and ensuring all architecture supports an impactful, reliable business solution with global potential.
  • Responsible solutions: Operating in a highly regulated and secure environment with security, privacy, and scalability by design.

Professional Qualifications

The ideal candidate has built, led, and scaled technical teams in developing new market solutions, ideally participating in the journey from pre-revenue to profitable enterprise.

  • Technical Breadth: A strong understanding of modern technology stacks, digital transformation concepts, including expertise in developing and deploying AI technologies (such as NLP, LVM, or Computer Vision) and experience with cloud or hybrid product architectures as well as experience with physical hardware such as networking, video, or other surveillance technologies. Ability to work effectively with Subject Matter Experts across various engineering disciplines.
  • Executive Experience: Proven tenure as an experienced and effective leader of Engineering/Technology teams within a high-growth start-up environment, with a track record of building and retaining diverse, high-performing technical teams, and demonstrated expertise engaging with senior leadership and Boards of Directors.
  • Scaling Expertise: Demonstrated ability to scale technical organizations, technology platforms, and infrastructure (especially distributed or hybrid architectures) in order to meet evolving market demands.
  • Strategic Communication: Expert capacity to listen and to clearly communicate complex technical value propositions and architectural decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Bias for Action: An entrepreneurial and considerate mindset with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment, rolling up your sleeves when necessary to achieve the right outcome.
  • Academic Foundation: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. An MBA or equivalent business leadership experience would be considered an asset.
  • Desirable Assets: Prior experience in solution prototyping, rapidly scaling start-ups, new product development, or working within physical security domains would be highly valued.
