Job description
Job Description

WHAT’S THE JOB?

This position takes place on site in a remote camp setting. Crew Leaders are live‑in staff for the full duration of the summer program. This position takes places in BIRCH RIVER, MB. Transportation cost support for individuals travelling from out of province.

OYEP Crew Leaders (CLs) are responsible for the day‑to‑day supervision, safety, and support of youth participants (“Rangers”) throughout the Outland Youth Employment Program. Crew Leaders work directly with youth and play a primary role in modeling workplace expectations, healthy group living, and professional behaviour. Many Rangers are experiencing their first job and first paycheque—Crew Leaders are essential mentors in building confidence, accountability, and readiness for work.

Crew Leaders maintain a clean, orderly, and professional camp environment at all times and are expected to build respectful, supportive relationships with Rangers and staff. This is a highly hands‑on leadership role that requires maturity, adaptability, and strong interpersonal skills in a communal, remote setting.

Crew Leaders provide constant, supportive supervision, assist with questions or challenges as they arise, and mentor Rangers through work projects, academic components, and daily routines. Crew Leaders are expected to act as positive, professional role models at all times.

Crew Leaders may be assigned a Camp Leading Role (e.g., Safety Officer, Educational Support, Recreation Lead, Social Media) and, when applicable, will mentor a Crew Leader in Training (CIT) as part of staff development and succession planning.

This role takes place in a full live in environment throughout the summer. Meals, accommodations, and on site transportation are provided for all staff and participants.

You must be available for the entirety of the program. Great position for post secondary students, treeplanters or other season workers.

Your work will include, but is not limited to:

Supervision & Youth Support

  • Provide active supervision of Rangers during work projects, training, academic sessions, and camp life
  • Monitor Ranger productivity, behaviour, and engagement during and after work hours
  • Hold regular check‑ins and nightly meetings with Rangers to reflect on daily activities and address concerns
  • Ensure Rangers understand expectations related to safety, conduct, and participation

Health & Safety

  • Maintain and enforce Outland’s workplace health and safety policies
  • Monitor safe operating procedures and PPE compliance
  • Report near misses, hazards, and incidents promptly
  • Participate in and help facilitate daily safety meetings
  • Conduct daily vehicle circle checks and ensure proper logbook use

Program Delivery & Operations

  • Assist in all work projects and classroom sessions (may include planting, site projects, tool use, or project wrap‑up)
  • Maintain camp cleanliness, vehicles, equipment, and shared spaces
  • Support daily schedules and ensure Rangers are where they need to be for work and academic activities
  • Complete diligent record‑keeping of incidents and activities in Crew Leader documentation

Healthy Living & Camp Culture

  • Promote and model healthy living behaviours, including:
    • Smoke‑free lifestyle
    • Healthy eating habits
    • Active living
    • Positive social interaction and cohesive group living

Team Leadership & Communication

  • Operate as part of an organized leadership team with other Crew Leaders, Crew Leaders in Training, and Supervisors
  • Communicate clearly with site leadership regarding Ranger needs, incidents, and daily operations
  • Participate in evening staff meetings with thoughtful input and reflections

    WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

  • Experience living and working in a remote, outdoor setting
  • Opportunity to develop leadership, mentoring, and youth‑focused facilitation skills
  • Zero cost of living while on site
  • Competitive pay structure (daily base rate plus applicable premiums and vacation pay)

Qualifications

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

  • Experience working with youth in camp, residential, outdoor, training, or educational settings is strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, or team support experience
  • Strong communication, conflict‑management, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to model professionalism, accountability, and healthy group living
  • Ability to live and work in a remote, communal camp environment for the full duration of the program
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing
  • First Aid & CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Ability to successfully complete a vulnerable sector check
