Job descriptionMinimum 7 years of hands-on payroll experience with at least 3 years of people-management experience, leading a team of 5+ payroll professionals Payroll leadership experience supporting complex payroll for organizations with at least 2,000+ employees Proven experience with payroll systems (ADP, Lawson, UKG, Ceridian, etc). Payroll designation required (e.g., PCP, CPM, or equivalent) Strong knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, statutory reporting, and taxation Experience in a complex, unionized and / or multi-site environment Strong leadership, stakeholder management, and communication skills
A large, complex healthcare organization is seeking a Manager, Payroll (Contract) to lead payroll operations across a multi-site, complex unionized environment.
This is a 3-month contract opportunity with potential to convert to permanent for the right fit. The role is accountable for delivering accurate, compliant, and timely payroll services at scale while driving operational excellence and continuous improvement.
Work Model : 3 days onsite in downtown Toronto, 2 days remote
Key Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end payroll operations, ensuring accurate bi-weekly payroll processing, statutory compliance, and strong internal controls
- Oversee payroll audits, reconciliations, remittances, year-end reporting, and general ledger interfaces
- Ensure compliance with federal and provincial payroll legislation, collective agreements, and taxation requirements
- Maintain integrity and effectiveness of payroll and time & attendance systems; oversee system updates, testing, and change management
- Partner cross-functionally with HR, Finance, IT, and other stakeholders to support data accuracy, reporting, and service delivery
- Lead, coach, and develop a payroll team, fostering a culture of service excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Support payroll-related projects, system implementations, and process improvement initiatives
- Establish and monitor service standards, KPIs, and business continuity plans
