Overview
As a member of the military, Nurse Practitioners provide care and treatment to ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and supported populations in a primary and tertiary care environment in Canada and while on operation.
Nurse Practitioners work within a collaborative practice model with other members of the health care team and lead the delivery of health services within their area of practice. They may work in domains including :
- Primary Care;
- Acute Care;
- Education and training;
- Policy and Program management.
Work environment
In the Primary Reserve Force, you will enroll through a specific Reserve unit. Your workplace will be your Reserve unit on a part-time basis, with minimal obligations outside training, typically one night per week and some weekends, with possibilities of full-time employment. During deployments, you live and work alongside CAF members.
If joining the Regular Force, upon completing training, you will be assigned to a base, with possible relocations throughout your career. Reserve members do not have to relocate outside their Reserve unit commitments.
Entry plans
If you already have a university degree and a license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Canada, and civilian experience, the CAF may place you directly into a Nurse Practitioner role after evaluation. Additional courses may be required. Contact [email protected] for more information.
Training
After Rank Qualification Lieutenant training, civilian Nurse Practitioners will complete a military healthcare provider course at the Canadian Forces Health Services Training Centre in Borden, Ontario. Opportunities for specialization include Aviation Medicine, Dive Medicine, and Submarine Medicine.
Part-time options
Reserve Nurse Practitioners are trained to the same standards as Regular Force members. Civilian experience should reflect employment as a Nurse Practitioner in Adult Primary or Acute Care. For eligibility confirmation, contact [email protected].
