MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Senior Engineer, Model Validation for a permanent position with a leading organization in Alberta’s electricity sector.
The successful candidate will lead the technical review and validation of power-system models and Project Data Update Packages (PDUPs) used in interconnection studies. Acting as a subject-matter expert, they will ensure submitted models are accurate, consistent, technically robust, and suitable for load-flow, short-circuit, dynamic, stability, and electromagnetic transient studies.
This position also plays an important leadership role within the engineering team by mentoring other engineers, delivering internal training, developing technical guidelines and checklists, and improving model-validation processes.

Responsibilities

Lead independent technical reviews and validation of project models used in power-system studies.

Review Project Data Update Packages to ensure model accuracy, consistency, completeness, and compliance with applicable requirements.

Validate model logic, assumptions, data sources, methodologies, parameterization, and study results.

Review generator, plant, transmission network, and static and dynamic models.

Validate line impedances, thermal ratings, seasonal limits, transformer parameters, tap changers, phase shifters, grounding, substation configurations, breaker models, bus arrangements, and protection interfaces.

Assess model convergence, numerical stability, and sensitivity to parameter variations.

Support the development and validation of interconnection study cases.

Interpret modeling results and clearly communicate technical implications, risks, sensitivities, and uncertainties to internal teams and market participants.

Identify and mitigate model-related risks, escalating material concerns that could affect project or system decisions.

Establish and apply structured model-validation frameworks, technical checklists, and peer-review protocols.

Serve as a subject-matter expert and primary resource for model-validation matters.

Mentor and coach engineers and reviewers in power-system and transmission-modeling best practices.

Develop and deliver internal training, technical guidelines, and supporting documentation.

Participate in cross-functional technical groups and share best practices with the Project Engineering team.

Work closely with Lead, Senior, and Principal Engineers, as well as internal and external stakeholders.
Qualifications
-
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
-
Registered as a Professional Engineer with APEGA or eligible for registration.
-
At least 10 years of engineering experience within the electric utility industry.

Significant experience with power-system modeling and analysis.

Demonstrated experience creating, reviewing, and validating PDUPs.
-
Strong understanding of load-flow, short-circuit, dynamic, stability, and interconnection studies.
-
Proficiency with power-system study software, particularly PSS®E for steady-state and dynamic studies.

Comprehensive understanding of Alberta’s electricity-sector regulatory framework, the AESO Tariff, reliability standards, and transmission facilities.

Strong technical review, analytical, problem-solving, and risk assessment skills.
-
Ability to clearly explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and improve the technical capabilities of others.
-
Comfortable working within a matrix environment and influencing decisions without direct authority.
Must-Haves
-
Electrical Engineering degree.

APEGA P.Eng. registration or eligibility.
-
10+ years of electric utility engineering experience.
-
Direct experience with power-system models and analysis.
-
Experience creating, reviewing, or validating PDUPs.
-
Strong PSS®E knowledge, including steady-state and dynamic modeling.

Knowledge of Alberta’s electricity regulatory framework and transmission system.
-
Strong stakeholder communication and technical mentoring capabilities.

Experience in transmission planning or power-system operations.

Experience completing customer access or generation interconnection studies.

Experience developing and validating models for both electromagnetic transient and phasor-domain simulations.

Experience with electromagnetic transient study tools and methodologies.
