Job description

Reporting to the College Librarian, the Learning Skills Coordinator works within the Learning Commons as part of the library’s overall support for student retention and completion. Collaborating with instructional, library, and student support staff, the Learning Skills Coordinator provides individualized and group supports to promote student academic success. Responsibilities include contributing to a welcoming Learning Commons, assessing and supporting learning needs of students, including students with specific disabilities, developing responsive programming to meet learning needs, invigilating exams, facilitating the peer tutor program; delivering learning skills workshops, and managing records and data.

There are three short-term positions available. Please indicate on your application which campus you are applying for:

  • Castlegar campus – 20% FTE
  • Trail campus – 20% FTE
  • Nelson, Tenth Street campus – 100% FTE

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Instructs one-on-one, small group and full class on a variety of topics by: Instructing study strategies, time management, goal setting, decoding, reading comprehension, note-taking, test-taking, memory techniques, stress management and test anxiety; Developing curriculum specific to the needs of individual students or groups; Promoting, designing and delivering workshops as needed.
  • Supports students at risk by: Liaising with students and relevant staff (instructors, counsellors, Accessibility Coordinators) to develop support materials, strategies and action plans; Implementing accommodations for students with disabilities, such as supporting invigilation of tests, reading and scribing service; Designing and delivering individualized study supports.
  • Coordinates and delivers the Peer Tutor Program by: Recruiting and hiring peer tutors; Conducting administrative duties for peer tutor program, (applications, time sheets, evaluation forms, tutor logs); Training tutors; Setting up and supporting tutor - student pairs, including helping with conflict resolution; Providing ongoing supervision, support and evaluation for tutors. Provides resources for students and instructors, such as books, handouts, videos, web-sites, computer-assisted instructional programs.
  • Provides invigilation by: Liaising with instructional staff to establish testing and exam schedules for students with accommodations; Liaising with instructors and Accessibility Services about testing accommodations; Invigilating exams when needed.
  • Promotes a respectful and supportive learning environment based on the principles of inclusion, equity and diversity by: Maintaining positive relationships with College faculty, staff and other professionals; Being a positive and active participant in departmental responsibilities; Providing support and cooperative assistance College faculty, staff and other professionals; Acting with professionalism and integrity at all times.
  • Maintains records and manages data related to student contact.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills;
  • Demonstrated team player;
  • Ability to be responsive and flexible;
  • Effective facilitator with excellent teaching skills;
  • Understanding of common disabilities and functional impacts in a post secondary setting;
  • Working knowledge related to common computer applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Reader);
  • Knowledge and understanding of academic programs related to specific campus where position is located;
  • A commitment to continuous learning.

Education and Experience

  • Masters’ Degree in Education or other relevant discipline;
  • 3-5 years’ experience in similar or related position.

These are short-term positions, between 20-100% FTE (see above), commencing August 17, 2026, and ending June 30, 2027. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the applicable Collective Agreement and are based on qualifications and experience.
