Job description

Your Job

INVISTA is seeking an Instrumentation & Controls Specialist / Engineer to join our Kingston, ON site. In this role, you will be a key technical resource responsible for the reliability, performance, and continuous improvement of industrial instrumentation and control systems supporting our manufacturing operations.

Our Team

You will be part of a highly collaborative instrumentation and reliability team that values technical excellence, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement. Team members work closely with operations, maintenance, project engineering, and reliability resources to solve complex challenges and improve manufacturing performance. We foster an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives are welcomed, individuals are empowered to contribute, and employees are encouraged to share what they know to help the entire team succeed.

What You Will Do

  • Troubleshoot control loops end to end, including field devices, wiring and marshalling, I/O, controller logic, and HMI displays.
  • Specify, calibrate, and maintain field instrumentation, including control valves and flow, level, pressure, and temperature measurement systems.
  • Develop and modify PLC logic in Studio 5000 (RSLogix 5000), and program and troubleshoot Allen-Bradley drives.
  • Support the ABB 800xA DCS environment and the virtualized servers that keep control system infrastructure running.
  • Produce and maintain I&C deliverables including P&IDs, loop and wiring drawings, panel and marshalling design, motor control schematics, instrument datasheets, I/O lists, cable and tray schedules, control narratives, cause and effect diagrams, and engineering work packages.
  • Apply MOC and PSSR discipline to every control system change, with documentation that remains effective and useful for years to come.
  • Champion the standards that keep people safe, including ISA-84/IEC 61511 (SIS), IEC 62443 (OT cybersecurity), ISA-18.2 (alarm management), ISA-101 (HMI graphics), ISA-5.1, ANSI/ISA-75 (valve sizing), and IEC 61131-3.
  • Share what you know. Mentor technicians and engineers, document key learnings, and leave the site smarter than you found it.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve process capability, asset reliability, and operational effectiveness.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • 3+ years’ experience working with industrial instrumentation and/or control systems in a manufacturing, chemical, refining, utilities, or similarly complex industrial environment
  • Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, calibrating, or commissioning field instrumentation, including measurement devices, analyzers, transmitters, and control valves
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving process measurement and control-loop performance issues
  • Experience interpreting instrumentation drawings, loop sheets, wiring diagrams, and process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Experience collaborating across multidisciplinary teams to align priorities, coordinate activities, and achieve objectives
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship or immigration support
  • One of the following:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • Engineering technology diploma, instrumentation or automation diploma, OR skilled-trades qualification, PLUS equivalent practical experience in instrumentation and controls

What Will Put You Ahead

  • 5+ years’ engineering experience working with industrial instrumentation and control systems in a manufacturing, chemical, refining, utilities, or similarly complex industrial environment
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley PLC platforms, Studio 5000, and industrial networking technologies
  • Exposure to HART, Modbus TCP/IP, Profibus DP and OPC (DA, AE, UA)
  • Experience with distributed control systems and operator interface applications
  • Experience with control valve sizing, diagnostics, and performance improvement
  • Experience applying ISA and IEC standards related to instrumentation, alarm management, safety systems, and industrial cybersecurity
  • Experience leading instrumentation and controls projects from concept through startup
  • Knowledge of reliability engineering and predictive maintenance practices

For this role, we anticipate paying a base salary of $90,000 to $140,000 CAD per year. This position is also eligible for variable compensation, which may be paid as a bonus or in another form.
