Job description

Term of App't: This position is backfilling a temporary leave until return of incumbent. Sunday - Wednesday, 8.75 hours per day

Start date: Immediately

Reporting to: Manager of Facilities

Salary:

Classification 17+, $41.33 – $42.61/hour annually, as per the BCGEU Support Collective Agreement. Temporary employees are provided with an additional $0.58/hour in lieu of benefits, and 6% vacation pay, for all regular hours worked.

Description:

Under the limited supervision and direction of the Manager(s) of Facilities Services, the Mechanical Technician carries out the preventive maintenance and servicing program for all systems on all campuses, and diagnose and repair all heating, ventilation, plumbing, minor electrical, refrigeration and hot water systems, in order to maintain continuous function. The Mechanical Technician will also be required to perform general maintenance work on buildings, grounds, and equipment; trouble shoot and repair minor electrical and pneumatic control systems; and repair faulty systems by changing bearings, motors, couplers, pumps, valves, and controls.

Those in this position must be capable of operating mobile equipment such as tractors, loaders, and forklifts. This position is based out of Fort St. John but would be expected to travel to the surrounding NLC campuses when the need arises.

Those in this position are expected to work independently, as well as to be an effective team member, contributing to the overall dynamics of the Facilities Department. Utilizing excellent troubleshooting skills, along with the ability to work in confined spaces and to have height tolerance are expected in the day-to-day tasks of the work. All work completed will meet or exceed the regulatory and safety standards.

The successful candidate will be expected to complete approximately one (1) month of training scheduled Monday – Friday 7:00am – 3:00pm after which they will revert to the positions regular schedule of Sunday – Wednesday 7am -4:45pm.

Please note - This position is a temporary backfill until return of incumbent.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have successfully completed grade 12, have a Trades certification in Plumbing or Gasfitter, with an additional three years' experience in institutional maintenance (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered). Must have be able to demonstrate knowledge of HVAC systems, and both electrical and computer operated (reliable controls) DDC heating and cooling systems. A Fifth Class Power Engineer certificate would be an asset. Experience with biomass boiler system would be an asset. Applicants must be able to speak to previous general grounds maintenance experience. Experience operating a plow truck, skid steer or loader will be ideal in order to assist with snow removal during the winter months. A valid B.C. Class 5 driver's license is required.
