We are supporting our hiring client in the oil & gas sector in the recruitment of a Chief Power Engineer. The hiring client is an Alberta-based company that provides critical sulphur-forming, handling, and logistics services to regional sulphur producers.

Located in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland near Fort Saskatchewan, the organization draws on decades of industry experience to safely and efficiently move sulphur—a key input for fertilizers and industrial applications—to North American and global markets.

Their terminal features flexible solid and liquid sulphur-loading capabilities, enabling reliable sulphur-handling services that connect Canadian sulphur supply to U.S. and overseas markets.

Job Title : Chief Power Engineer

Employment Type : This position is full-time / permanent

Location : Fort Saskatchewan, AB

Reports to : Assistant Terminal Manager

Direct Reports : A team of 8-10 power engineers that will work on shifts 24 / 7 / 365

Compensation Range :

This is a salaried position offering a competitive compensation structure, including a 10% annual retention bonus and attractive benefits.

Chief Power Engineer Role Summary :

The Chief Power Engineer is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of the Heartland Sulphur Terminal steam power plants and ancillary equipment in accordance with all applicable Alberta boiler, pressure equipment, and power engineering regulations and HST procedures. This includes providing training, guidance, and education in the proper operation and maintenance of steam and utility equipment to the power engineers working at HST. Responsibilities also include training and supervising power engineers across all areas of their responsibilities, including, but not limited to, panel operations, HSE support, and utility operations.

Chief Power Engineer Role Primary Duties & Responsibilities include :

  • Direct Shift Engineers on a daily basis in the proper operation and maintenance of all steam power plant infrastructure and associated ancillary equipment as required by the Power Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Act and Regulations.
  • Direct Shift Engineers in daily schedules, activities, priorities, and tasks.
  • Provide guidance and education to Shift Engineers and other power engineers in the safe and proper operation of steam systems and utility infrastructure.
  • Oversee the execution of the preventive maintenance program associated with all steam generation equipment. Work with the Maintenance Supervisor to ensure all steam-generating equipment is maintained by appropriately trained personnel. Assign tasks to Shift Engineers as required to complete PMs.
  • Develop training materials and competency guidelines for power engineers, including onboarding materials and systems for determining appropriate competency for power engineers and Shift Engineers.
  • Work with the training department to ensure all power engineers are appropriately trained for their respective scope of work.
  • Ensure Shift Engineers are properly trained for all aspects of their role, including but not limited to :
  • control panel operation
  • HSE support, including LOTO management, safe work permit management, HSE documentation, and other support as requested
  • Utility operations
  • Works closely with Maintenance Supervisor, HSE Manager, Operations / Terminal leadership.
  • Ensure proper documentation of all steam and utility general equipment maintenance and preventive maintenance activities in accordance with HST policies and procedures.
  • Communicate with Terminal Manager, General Manager, and other management team members regarding plant operations, including, but not limited to :
  • Steam and utility infrastructure status
  • Risks to steam and utility infrastructure operation
  • Steam generation and utility infrastructure needs, including any requests for support, materials, or direction.
  • Risks associated with power engineer staffing
  • Status of power engineer competencies, staffing levels, training needs, and areas requiring attention or improvement
  • Communicate with vendors and schedule services as required for steam generation operations and maintenance to ensure HST steam generation infrastructure remains safely and reliably operational.
  • Requisition equipment, parts, and services required for steam generation as per HST Purchasing Policy.
  • Cooperate with the HSE Manager as needed to ensure all HST HSE policies and procedures are followed by all employees, contractors, and visitors to HST.
  • Be available for emergency communication with the terminal outside of normal business hours for steam generation-related issues.

Role Accountability & Success Measures

  • Full regulatory compliance and audit readiness with no findings and timely corrective actions
  • Minimize steam and utility downtime events and maintain operational reliability
  • Consistent, proper completion of utility-related PM activities
  • Minimize incidents and near-miss events for Shift Engineers and related scopes
  • Ensure full training and competency certification for all Shift Engineers
  • Maintain accurate and current documentation for Shift Engineers and related activities
  • To be considered for this role, the “Chief Power Engineer” must have the following qualifications :

  • Must hold a minimum 3rd Class Power Engineer- Certificate of Competency issued by Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA).
  • Safety tickets relevant to HST (LOTO, confined space, WHMIS, etc.)
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the industry and 5 years of experience leading teams of people.
  • Strong communication skills
