MatchBox Consulting GroupVancouver, British ColumbiaMatchBox is urgently seeking an experienced Senior Database Administrator (DBA) for a permanent position for our Vancouver based client. The ideal candidate will bring a wealth of experience in database management, mentoring, and advanced AWS technologies. This role is perfect for someone who has a strong technical background and is passionate about leading projects and helping others grow. While there are no direct reports now, prior leadership experience (as a lead DBA) would be a significant advantage. The candidate must be based in British Columbia and available to work within West Coast hours. This is a mostly remote role with a company meet-up once per month downtown Vancouver.
Key Responsibilities :
Database Administration :
Manage, maintain, and optimize large-scale databases (MySQL 5.X, AWS-based systems) to ensure high availability, performance, and security.
Migrate and upgrade older database versions (MySQL 5.X) to newer releases and cloud technologies, ensuring seamless transitions.
Perform data transformation and imports at scale, including the handling of billions of rows of data across various environments.
AWS Expertise :
Lead efforts in managing AWS cloud databases and services, including :
AWS DMS (Database Migration Service) : Efficiently migrate databases to and from AWS environments.
Amazon Redshift : Manage and optimize Redshift clusters for large-scale analytics.
SPICE : Implement and optimize SPICE for faster querying in AWS QuickSight.
S3 / Parquet : Utilize Amazon S3 for large-scale data storage and manage data in Parquet format for performance efficiency.
Mentorship & Leadership :
Provide mentorship to junior DBAs and other technical team members, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented environment.
Share best practices and improve team processes to ensure the success of database-related projects.
Lead efforts on complex database issues, troubleshooting, and optimization strategies.
Collaborative Problem-Solving :
Work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver technical solutions that meet business needs.
Assist in implementing scalable solutions for handling vast quantities of data.
Performance Monitoring & Optimization :
Continuously monitor and fine-tune database performance to ensure optimal query times, system availability, and resource allocation.
Troubleshoot performance issues and recommend solutions.
Qualifications : Experience :
10 to 15+ years of hands-on DBA experience, with at least 2 years of senior-level database administration.
Proven experience with AWS services, especially DMS , Redshift , SPICE , S3 , and Parquet .
Strong background in database migration, including MySQL 5.X upgrades and troubleshooting.
Technical Skills :
Advanced MySQL knowledge and experience with database optimization and troubleshooting.
Familiarity with QuickSight for business intelligence and reporting is a major plus.
Experience working with data at scale, specifically in terms of transforming and importing vast datasets (billions of rows).
Soft Skills :
Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to work independently and in a team setting.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to mentor and share knowledge with others effectively.
Comfortable working in a remote environment while maintaining productivity and clear communication.
Preferred Skills :
Experience with AWS QuickSight for data visualizations.
Leadership experience in managing teams, even if informal or project based
