Hundreds of millions of public transit passengers around the world rely on apps to get information on how to get around. These apps and transportation providers rely on data standards to structure and exchange this information on things like subway routes, bus schedules, network disruptions, fares, and many other useful pieces of passenger information.

GTFS (General Transit Feed Specification) is a widely adopted open standard used by several thousand agencies across the globe such as the New York MTA, Tokyo Metro, and Paris RATP. This standard facilitates the dissemination of transit information to passengers through popular apps like Apple Maps, Google Maps, Transit, and Moovit.

At MobilityData, our mission is to enhance the traveler experience through the usage of open data standards for the mobility ecosystem in order to empower people to travel in the most sustainable ways across the globe. Our work includes facilitating discussions to advance standardization efforts for the benefit of global users, proposing new functionalities, and offering support through comprehensive documentation and training.

What You Will Do

Our Public Transit Data Quality product area is responsible for tools that help data producers increase spec compliance, accuracy, and depth of their transit data.

As a software developer in our small, high-performance team, you will wear multiple hats—focusing primarily on robust backend development with secondary frontend contributions to ensure a seamless experience.

Reporting to the technical lead, the software developer will work alongside product managers, developers, and an active open-source community to define the future of transit data quality. We are looking for someone with a strong interest in public transport and shared mobility, eager to contribute to our diverse engineering ecosystem.

Responsibilities

  • Software Development
    • Collaborate with the product manager to build tools aligned with the established roadmap.
    • Deliver scalable, testable, and maintainable code using our diverse technology ecosystem (Python, Java, TypeScript/NextJS).
    • Leverage AI tools to accelerate development and streamline code reviews, always maintaining a human-in-the-loop approach to ensure quality.
    • Contribute to documentation and educational content to communicate technical requirements to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Open Source Collaboration & Software Maintenance
    • Review code developed by our contributors and provide feedback to ensure best practices.
    • Participate in triaging issues and maintaining our tools based on severity and priority.
    • Work on key initiatives featured in our portfolio, including the GTFS Validator, MobilityDatabase Web, and Mobility Feed API.
  • Knowledge Sharing
    • Share knowledge, promote standard methodologies, and collaborate with our team of developers.

Who You Are

We value curiosity, a collaborative spirit, and a pragmatic approach to problem-solving. As a developer at MobilityData, you will be expected to wear multiple hats, working across our diverse environment to build tools that matter.

  • Adaptability & Versatility: You are comfortable context-switching between backend logic and frontend interfaces, thriving in environments where you can explore various tools.
  • Engineering Ecosystem: You bring a strong technical foundation to our team:
  • Core Stack: You are proficient in Python and/or Java, and willing to work with TypeScript/NextJS.
  • Infrastructure & CI/CD: You are experienced with cloud-native infrastructure, automated delivery pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform).
  • Design Philosophy: You embrace Schema-First/Model-First development using OpenAPI to build robust, contract-driven APIs, always prioritizing reliability and seamless delivery.
  • Open Source Mindset: You are eager to work in an open collaborative environment, engage directly with community contributors, and take pride in maintaining public-facing repositories.
  • Mission-Driven: You possess a strong interest in public transport and shared mobility, motivated by the goal of improving data quality for the public good.
  • Experience Level: You cumulate 3+ years of professional software development experience. You excel at taking ownership of defined features, troubleshooting complex issues, and creating clear technical documentation.
  • Education Level: You hold a Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, computer information systems, a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Languages: You are fully proficient in English speaking and writing; multilingual abilities are an asset.
