BCIT’s
Information Technology Services department is seeking a
regular, full-time (1.0 FTE)Data Specialist to support the management, quality, and governance of institutional data across the organization. This position plays a key role in ensuring enterprise data is accurate, well defined, and suitable for reporting, analytics, and operational decision making.
The Data Specialist works within a complex enterprise data environment that includes core systems of record, analytics platforms, and cloud-based ERP solutions. The role supports institutional priorities by improving data quality, consistency, and understanding, and by enabling trusted data for operational reporting, analytics, and major initiatives such as ERP modernization.
Working closely with technical teams, functional analysts, and business stakeholders, the Data Specialist contributes to data governance practices, supports data integration and migration activities, and helps ensure institutional data is well documented, well governed, and fit for use across the organization. Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Enterprise Data Management: - Act as a subject matter resource for enterprise data, systems of record, and authoritative data sources.
- Develop, maintain, and curate enterprise data definitions, metadata, and data dictionaries.
- Support the identification and documentation of data ownership and stewardship responsibilities.
- Ensure BCIT data delivers measurable value by supporting effective data management practices aligned with business strategies and priorities.
- Analyze data security requirements and solutions to ensure all data—both on‑premises and cloud‑based—is managed and protected as a critical enterprise asset.
Data Quality & Governance: - Perform and support data cleansing, validation, and data quality improvement activities.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining data quality monitoring and issue resolution processes.
- Contribute to the development and application of enterprise data governance standards and practices.
Data Integration & Analytics Support: - Support data preparation, transformation, and reconciliation activities for ERP implementations, upgrades, or migrations.
- Assist with data loading and validation activities for cloud-based ERP or SaaS environments.
- Support ETL/ELT processes that integrate enterprise data into analytics platforms, data warehouses, or Lakehouse environments.
- Collaborate with analytics and reporting teams to ensure data is fit for analytical and reporting use.
Documentation & Collaboration: - Document data flows, transformations, and business rules to support transparency and sustainability.
- Work closely with IT staff, functional analysts, and business stakeholders to support institutional reporting and analytics needs.
Reporting and Planning Analytics Development and Support: - Support and maintain reports and dashboards especially in Cognos Analytics and Millennium FAST
- Update, maintain and operate data refresh in Planning Analytics (TM1) application
- Contribute to the planning, design, development, and deployment of new applications, and enhancements to existing applications
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum two-year diploma in Computer Systems, Data Management, or a related discipline, or a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, statistics, business, or a related field; plus a minimum of six (6) years of current, practical experience, of which at least four (4) years must be in a Data Specialist role or a closely related data-focused role.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

QUALIFICATION SPECIFICS: - Demonstrated experience working with post-secondary education data, including academic, student, financial, and human resources domains.
- Strong working knowledge of enterprise systems of record, including data ownership and authoritative data sources.
- Experience understanding and documenting enterprise or corporate data models.
- Proven experience developing, maintaining, and curating data dictionaries, data definitions, and metadata.
- Demonstrated experience with data cleansing, data validation, and data quality improvement initiatives.
- Hands-on experience working with a post-secondary ERP, preferably Ellucian Banner ERP, including understanding of core data structures and functional modules.
- Experience supporting ERP data migration activities, including data profiling, cleansing, transformation, and reconciliation.
- Experience preparing and loading data into cloud-based ERP or SaaS environments, preferably Banner SaaS.
- Strong understanding of data governance frameworks, including data stewardship, data ownership, data standards, and data lifecycle management.
- Demonstrated experience implementing and maintaining data quality processes, controls, and monitoring.
- Experience designing and executing ETL/ELT processes to support enterprise reporting and analytics platforms.
- Hands-on experience integrating data into a data warehouse or lakehouse environment, preferably using Microsoft Fabric or similar analytics platforms.
- Strong understanding of dimensional modeling, analytical data structures, and reporting requirements.
- Advanced Oracle PL/SQL or MS SQL skills with experience working in large, complex relational database environments.
- Experience collaborating with analytics, reporting, and business intelligence teams to enable trusted, well-governed data for decision-making.
- Familiarity with data integration tools, orchestration platforms, or pipelines used in enterprise environments.
- Experience working in Agile or hybrid delivery environments.
- High level of professionalism, integrity, and ethical responsibility in the handling of institutional data.
EXPERIENCE IN THE FOLLOWING WOULD BE AN ASSET - Experience with Ellucian Ethos and Ethos Data Models.
- Experience supporting Banner SaaS implementations or migrations.
- Experience working with post-secondary institutional data standards and regulatory reporting.
- Advanced experience with Microsoft Fabric.
- Experience with data governance or metadata management tools.
- Familiarity with JIRA or similar work management tools.
- Experience working with Oracle or SQL Server database environments.
- Experience in Cognos Analytics development and administration
- Experience with Cognos Framework Manager/data module
- Experience administering and supporting TM1
