About the Role:

Reporting to the Supervisor, Electronics Shop, the Electronics Instrument Technologist supports the operation of the Electronics Shop by performing the design, fabrication, modifications, repair, testing, and maintenance of scientific equipment used for research, teaching, and specialized applications. Located within the Faculty of Mathematics & Science, this is an academic support role that also provides services to the entire University’s operational needs.

The position builds custom electronics hardware and software solutions from scratch, as well as the troubleshooting and repair of electro-mechanical equipment on campus. Additionally, the Electronics Instrument Technologist is responsible for documenting work, assisting with inventory, assisting with training other incumbents, training on the operation of custom-built equipment, and ensuring compliance with health and safety practices across multiple dangers associated with lab and shop safety. The position contributes to high-quality, timely service delivery and supports continuous improvement within the shop and teaching/research lab spaces.

The Electronics Instrument Technologist will:

  • Perform day‑to‑day electronics project work as assigned, including fabrication, repair, testing, and troubleshooting;
  • Support the full cycle of shop requests by preparing materials lists, clarifying requirements, and ensuring accurate documentation of work performed;
  • Inspect incoming equipment to assess condition, safety, and required work; escalate hazards or complex issues;
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance, testing, and calibration for instruments and Equipment including daily, weekly, and monthly inspections;
  • Consult with supervisors, professors, graduate students, and teaching assistants to understand the specific requirements and ensure efficiency of final design;
  • Design and build electronic components, including schematic development, PCB layout, soldering, wiring, assembly, and functional testing;
  • Support firmware or software development for custom devices or control systems as required;
  • Create schematics, circuit board layouts, assemblies, and related engineering documentation;
  • Maintain accurate technical records, work instructions, and documentation in both digital and manual formats;
  • Diagnose electronic malfunctions, recommend and complete repairs, and collaborate with supervisors or researchers on complex issues;
  • Maintain time sheets and other items for allocating and tracking operations (, materials, consumables, labour hours, etc.);
  • Monitor inventory levels of parts, tools, and consumables; flag shortages and assist with restocking.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • College Diploma in Computer/Electronics Engineering Technologist (3 Year Program) or the equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered;
  • Experience in electronics shop environment, including equipment service, reading schematics and basic knowledge of sciences;
  • Strong electronic diagnostic skills in analog and digital systems;
  • Knowledge of embedded microcontroller design, including circuit design and C or Python programming;
  • Strong aptitude for science, mathematics and programming as well as a practical approach to electronic system design and assembly;
  • Ability to constantly learn about the equipment, changes in technology, emerging products, and best practices in the field;
  • Promotes and embodies inclusivity and respect within the workplace and the broader community;
  • Strong customer service skills, the ability to discern customer needs, and the ability to communicate technical information effectively with all contacts;
  • Ability to work as part of a team and with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to work in an environment where there is frequent exposure to factors such as temperature variations/ extremes, fumes, moving machinery, humidity, and toxic materials;
  • Complex problem-solving to identify and fix problems over multiple disciplines including scientific, electronic, and mechanical systems;
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize jobs to provide high levels of precision and quality service;
  • Excellent attention to detail, judgement, and independent thinking skills.

Preferred or Asset Skills:

  • 3D Modelling;
  • G Code Programming.

Salary and Total Rewards:

  • Job Grade L, Salary Scale ($66,817-$108,353);
  • Target Hiring Range: $66,817-$75,000*
  • This is a permanent position that includes:
