Job description

The Opportunity

This is not a transactional customs role. It is a senior-level position where your knowledge becomes the backbone of compliance integrity and client confidence.

You will be relied upon to interpret and apply Canadian import regulations across a wide range of scenarios, often serving as the escalation point for complex or ambiguous cases. Beyond day-to-day processing, you will contribute to advisory work, support internal teams, and play a role in strengthening client compliance frameworks.

There is also a visible element to the role. You may be involved in training sessions, client discussions, and knowledge-sharing initiatives that position you as a subject matter expert.

Position Description

In this role, you will take ownership of the full lifecycle of customs compliance activities.

  • Releasing and accounting for shipments across all modes of transport
  • Assigning accurate tariff classifications, including advanced use of Chapter 99 provisions
  • Applying appropriate GST exemptions, excise taxes, and trade remedies where required
  • Ensuring compliance with federal regulatory bodies and partner government agencies
  • Supporting complex entries such as voluntary disclosures and temporary imports
  • Acting as a resource for internal teams and external clients on regulatory interpretation
  • Reviewing Free Trade documentation for accuracy and completeness
  • Contributing to client databases with properly classified products and trade data
  • Assisting with amendments, refunds, and broader compliance initiatives
  • Delivering or supporting training sessions and educational content when required

This role blends technical execution with advisory responsibility, making it ideal for someone who enjoys both precision and problem-solving.

Experience

  • 10+ years in customs compliance, brokerage, or consulting environments
  • Experience handling complex classifications, regulatory interpretation, and client-facing advisory
  • Exposure to multiple industries and product categories is strongly preferred

Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of Canadian import regulations, including valuation, origin, and tariff classification
  • Strong working knowledge of government agency requirements and trade compliance frameworks
  • Familiarity with trade remedies, excise considerations, and import/export permitting
  • Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables and data analysis
  • Strong analytical mindset with exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Clear and professional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • CCS designation required; additional certifications considered an asset

Education

  • Secondary school diploma required
  • Customs Certified Specialist (CCS) designation is required
  • Additional certifications such as CTCS or other trade compliance credentials are considered strong assets

This role places a high value on formal customs education and ongoing professional development, reflecting the technical depth and regulatory responsibility associated with the position.
