Research Assistant
Position Summary
The Institute of Environmental Change and Society (IECS) and the Institute for Microbial Systems and Society (IMSS) at the University of Regina (Canada) are seeking applicants for one (1) Research Assistant position.
We are seeking a highly motivated Microbiology and / or Molecular Biologist who will be involved in performing molecular assays from environmental samples.
Key Responsibilities :
- Independently performs nucleic acid extraction from a variety of sources including wastewater, environmental and patient samples.
- Quantitative analyses of nucleic acids including qRT-PCR / dPCR and library preparation for next-generation sequencing (NGS) following established procedures.
- Solid-phase extraction of small molecules form environmental samples in preparation for mass spectrometric analyses.
- Analyze and upload data to databases, prepare reports and manuscripts for publication, and attend meetings with supervisors as required.
- Ensures that laboratory areas are well-organized.
- Applies general technical knowledge and skills to perform routine, standardized laboratory research techniques and procedures.
- Supports the laboratory as required.
Position Requirements Education and Experience : The successful applicant will have a B.Sc. in biology or biochemistry. MSc degree and experience working with complex samples are an asset.
Knowledge and Skills : Previous laboratory experience is required, specifically performing nucleic acid extraction and dPCR / qRT-PCR.
NGS library preparation, SPE and other techniques are assets.
Attributes and Competencies : The successful applicant will have excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with the ability to provide meaningful biological interpretation of PCR / qRT-PCR data.
The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, excellent organizational and excellent oral and written communication skills to discuss results with scientific professionals.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with others in a team environment, especially within a multi-disciplinary team.
