Job Description

Reporting to the Director, Performance, the Manager, Performance is responsible for leading and overseeing the (public or private) performance operations team including related projects, research and the development of additional analytics related to measurement and attribution of performance results of the total Fund, (public or private) investment programs and their respective benchmarks.

The Performance team is one of four teams in the Management Analytics group, with the mandate to calculate returns of the Fund’s investments and their benchmarks along multiple dimensions to assess performance.

The team measures and attributes contributions of each Investment Department to the total Fund results as well as against their benchmarks.

The team also provides ad hoc analysis on investment performance to support Management and Investment Departments’ needs.

This position will work closely with our internal and external business partners to guide future development and enhancements of the Performance systems, tools, and processes.

The Manager, Performance in partnership with the Director, members of Performance team, and internal business partners will develop and implement new performance measurement methodologies and the further development of performance analytics to suit the evolving needs of CPP Investments.

The Manager will build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues across the organization, participate in cross departmental project initiatives to develop and implement the appropriate processes, systems, analytics, and reports that will allow for more thorough and timely quantification and attribution of the performance of the investment portfolio and its benchmarks.

The Manager will train and develop team members and foster a strong and vibrant team culture with an emphasis on collaboration and innovation, consistent with CPP Investments Guiding Principles of high performance, integrity, and partnership.

Role-Specific Accountabilities :

  • Develop and evolve roles and responsibilities for the performance measurement, attribution, monitoring and reporting activities, in a manner consistent with the business and strategic plans of the Finance department and the CPP Investments
  • Supports the creation and update of the Performance Measurement and Reporting Standard, Performance Measurement Methodologies, and operational procedures
  • Leads team initiatives to improve existing processes by driving change through an innovative thinking mindset.
  • Evaluate processes and system capabilities and provide business cases to support recommended enhancements and / or new functionality.
  • Lead and ensure the effective communication and execution of the department’s and CPP Investments cross-functional projects, common system applications, operational capabilities to ensure value added processes and systems are developed to achieve strategic objectives
  • Undertake ad hoc production of performance analysis to support Management Reporting ( historical benchmarking, compensation benchmark calculations, ad hoc composite / aggregated reporting, P&L reporting, FX reporting, attribution analysis, etc.)
  • Develops and fosters effective relationships with other CPP Investments departments
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in investment management, pension fund or financial services industries, including a minimum of 5-7 years of progressive performance measurement experience, combined with a minimum of 3 years of people management experience
  • Post-graduate or professional designations are an asset ( MBA / MFin, CFA, CIPM, FRM, CAIA or CPA / CA)
  • In-depth technical proficiency with industry standards on performance reporting and attribution ( GIPS)
  • Solid demonstrated experience building and managing a team of professionals
  • Proven ability to initiate, develop and leverage senior internal and external relationships
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical abilities and financial skills
  • Self-motivated, flexible, and innovative
  • Demonstrated good judgment, professionalism and integrity
  • Solid prioritization and organizational skills
  • Proven ability to take on additional responsibilities and projects as required
  • Solid understanding of MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Python (or other coding language), SQL etc.
  • Team player who enjoys high performance culture, is open to constantly evolving and changing priorities and new challenges
  • Demonstrated expertise in Performance measurement software focusing on solution design, implementation, and continuous improvements.
